My buddy says recently at GM dealerships, they are not using Tech 1 or Tech 2 on newer cars, GM now wants you to hook the car up to a specific system that communicates directly with GM over an internet connection. He told me what the system is called but I can't remember the name. He was not to happy because they were having internet problems at work and the car did not want to communicate with the mothership at GM. |

Re: Future of Auto Service
Mclaren done this in the early 90's with the F1. You would plug the car into a phone line and BMW could download the engine data, pretty amazing stuff back then. I know Ferrari tooling is mostly like this now, and those ^%*&((%^& no longer sell the technical stuff, it's all in cyber land.

Re: Future of Auto Service
After watching that BMW video, I guess my 15 year old nephew can get a job as a BMW mechanic. They make it look so simple.
Is the car really so instrumented that there is NO manual diagnostic done at all. That is hard to believe. Jim

Re: Future of Auto Service
With the advent of electric/hybrids, wire actuated controls etc., myriad sensors,
there shouldn't be much of anything that can't be diagnosed remotely. Look at what On-star can do. And with the band width available, no real reason for stand alone diag systems. They can all be updated immediately, control of software is centralized along with access. With lower unit sales, service and parts dollars become that more valuable for profitability. All part of the battle between OEM and aftermarket for the service dollar. |
