For those of you that ever have removed the D/S Left Hand camcover, you'll know you probably had to remove the brake booster. In future, remove the L/H engine mount nut & jack the motor up on the L/H side, it allows full clearance of the rear most bolts, eliminating the need to take out the brake booster, which we all know if you've ever doen it, what a major pita that one is.

Takes 5 minutes of work to save 4 hours of grief.

I visited Marc H.'s shop last year while on business in the Chicago area. While showing me around the talk turned to cam cover removal. He told me there is a way to remove the left cover without removing the brake booster assembly. I didn't pursue the topic, but the engine mount method must be the way he eluded to.

Thanks for the tip...it sounds relatively easy to do and a time saver too.

Tell all...did you discover it by accident, or were you just looking for a better way?

Do you jack up the motor in any particular spot or just on the oil pan with a 2x4?

Thank you thank you .....limey :thumbsup::thumbsup:

I removed both cam covers from my 1991 ZR1 today in about 30 minutes ;)

I placed one jack under cross member just in front of oil pan with 12 inch long 2x6 as cushion. I placed second jack under forward corner drivers side of oil pan with shorter 2x6 as cushion. I removed drivers side engine mounting nut and jacked drivers side of engine up maybe 2 to 3 inches more or less. At that point I could get my 3/8 drive extension with 40 torx over the top of the brake booster and removed the two lower torx cam cover bolts to the rear of the cam cover

Keep as much pressure (pushing into the bolt) on the torx as you can while breaking the torx bolt loose.

I removed the power steering pump and reservoir (three bolts accessed through the power steering pump pulley) at the front of the drivers side cam cover so I could get at the 3 smaller torx bolts on that end. I removed the AC/heater box cover (5 screws) at the rear of the passenger side cam cover so I could get at the lower torx bolts on that end.

Glad it worked out for you, looks like all the questions were answered in that one response.

Should encourage others to now think about refinishing their top end, no reason now why you couldn't remove both cam covers and plenum assembly in 1 hour or less, then send off to the powder coater of your choice.

All i can say is, i had an epiphany.

Re the powder coaters...Yeah, I believe you just boosted their biz quite a bit! One of the best tips of the year, I recon!:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Oh, SON OF A *****! Now you tell me!

I'm always looking for easier ways to do things and this method NEVER even dawned on me. Could have saved 10 hours of PIA work over the last year alone!

Thanks Limey!!!

That's a very nice tip! I'm gonna file that one away in my brain. That's the kind of stuff I usually come up with, because I refuse to do it the hard way unless I really have to.
