View Full Version : Oil pan removal advice

I have an oil leak from the pan and I'm going to drop it to change the gasket for Jerry's great replacement.

I know I have to remove the K brace to get the pan off, is there anything to watch out for or words of advice?

Straightforward, just remember to replace the o-ring for the oil pump pick-up tube :-)

the little bolts up front are really hard to get to, might jack it up just a bit to give you clearance

you can pull the pan and get to those bolts without lifting the engine, but it's really tight and my fat little sausage fingers didn't fit too well.

hard to get them in there and get the threads started

clean the pan up really good as it's likely pretty nasty as this point

Does anyone have torque specs for the K-Brace bolts? Can't seem to find it mentioned anywhere in the FSM.

Don't start this project before your trip:jawdrop: One thing wrong will lead to another and so on and so on. I'll end up bring my tools up to your place to get you going again:mrgreen:

Actually Bob, I think you're right. :thumbsup: The oil leak isn't large enough to make changing the gasket a real necessity.

Would still like to know the torque settings for the K-brace though if anyone knows what they should be.

Dave, I have never found a torque spec for any of those bolts. I just use a ratcheting box wrench and use what I think is enough. Which is pretty damn tight.

for a lot of bolts/nuts combination,the torque settings are standard values,and you can find them in the machinist handbook...
problem is ,unless you're a machinist,you probably dont have that book...and being quite expensive,its no use for you to buy it just for that...ill dig in my stuff to see if i can post the standard values for torque settings,because unless you have some kind of special assembly built with rare,exotic and/or very special material or function (damper bolt),this is what you probably need.

The torque specs for the K-Braces is in the Service Manual Supplement for the LT5. It's on page 6A2A-18 , the second "tighten" heading. The front crossmember bolts 59 lb. ft. and the side member bolts 46 lb. ft.

Thanks IowaZr-1, I found it with your reference. They don't call it a K-brace in GM terminology it's a front or rear crossmember brace. I even looked through that section and didn't spot it! :redface:

I just tightened mine up. :)

A 1/4" Snap On swivel socket was a great asset.
