OK...found new glass to replace my existing rear window but have these funny round fasteners that attach the glass to the hinge plate. Would like to use existing hinge plate, so how do you remove these fasteners? Is there some special GM tool that is required?
Thanks
Rich

That top piece is bonded to the glass, IMHO you are better of painting the new piece on the hatch to match

The bond of the glass and the hinge on a 15 year old or more assembly probably isn't very secure any longer anyway. The glass on my '90 wasn't and I looked at a '94 not long ago that wasn't either.
You need a "purpose built" spanner socket or you need to be creative. Year one sells one they call a "replica" that is the correct size. Eastwood might. There's such a thing as an "adjustable spanner" also but I don't recall them doing that small a "span"!
If you really need to use your hinge plate you can be creative! Use an inexpensive socket of the correct diameter and if you've access to a grinder you'll have a "specialty/purpose created" spanner socket.
An older automotve glass shop would have the correct spanner or an older body man surely would. There's different sizes, you might want to measure center to center the two holes! If your bond is weak or broken you can ask the glass shop for a recommendation of bonding agent to secure it again.
I've seen a pair of 90* "bent nose" pliers used! Not me!

Also what bonding material needs to be used?

That's the one I meant BUT I've never used. I just read my post again and I shouldn't have used is correct, I should have mentioned "likely is"!! I referenced that one so the OP had an idea of what he might be looking for.
Using that image if a person couldn't put their "hands on" one at a glass shop or body shop they could fabricate one. The correct diameter socket, a grinder or Dremel and a person would be ready quickly.
I don't recall which product we used for an adhesive. It was likely a DURAMIX product or a FUSOR product by Lord. I don't believe it was windshield urethane adhesive but I don't know why that wouldn't be a good repair or maybe even the desired! I do believe it was a "semi-rigid" product. I did that nearly six years ago.

As usual, you guys are the BOM! There is an existing hinge plate attached to the glass now, but it's got some dings, I would prefer to reuse mine. I will purchase the tool and see how tough it is to remove the existing plate. If I run into problems, I may play it safe and just let a glass shop do it. Thanks guys!!!!

Rich,
how bad is the plate you don't want to use? my hatch is also not attached perfect and I may attempt to remove it from the plate, but my plate is 'bowed' I might be interested in the one you don't use

Rich, If you decide to attempt the repair at home, give me a call and I will come help. I seems like a job where helpers holding the glass would be an advantage.

The edge is scraped up pretty good from having the glass stored on that edge and it has a small dimple that looks like it was there before it was painted over at the factory. I'll try to take some pics

Well, got my wrench today and got the spanner nuts off and YEP the hinge plate is bonded to the glass and on to stay!!! Looks like I bought a piece of glass for nothing. It would be cheaper to try and remove the window tint than have the hinge plate re-painted :mad::mad:

Hi Rich you seem to have forgotten that I am a glass man by trade. You have everything you need right here in your own backyard just ask.

I talked to Gordon Killebrew years ago about removing the hinge plate to repaint it on a car I had and was told its next to impossible to get the adhesive to soften up to remove the plate.I would be interested in a spare hinge plate if somebody has one laying around.
