Hello everyone. Been lurking for a week or to as I am a new ZR-1 owner. I was the lucky winner of the purple 1989 ZR-1 at Barrett Jackson on Tuesday. Now for the record, I was not "over served" nor am I a bank CEO. I just like to "invest" in quality cars, and this one is now number one on my list of favortes. I am not a Corvette newbie nor a C4 newbie, but this is my first Z... Hell of a choice for #1:jawdrop: OK I joind the registry and paid my dues now I need your help. How can I get all the stampings on the engine/tranny so I can marinate in those strange facts we NCRS guys like. Having decoded countless "normal" small blocks I though I could find them, but this thing is jammed in the engine bay And I will be dammed that I can't see even 1. Can I do this without tearing it apart? (BTW I did pick up a set of the correct 89 wheels) Eric

Welcome Eric and congrats on your new car. Like you, I was anxious to find my engine stamping so I could verify that it was the original (it is). If I remember correctly, I used a flashlight and a mirror. I manuevered the mirror just above the passenger side cat and was able to view the stamping on the block. I have a lift, so it made it a little easier. Not sure about the stamping on the tranny ... forgot to look at that one.

You'll need a flashlight, a hand held mirror, and lots of patience.

Tom, thanks for the welcome. Great link thanks Just for clarification there are two stamps on the block. The assembly/lt5 info stamp on the front passenger side (this picture shows an L98) and a Car VIN stamp on wither the pass or driver side rear dear where the bell housing bolts. Eric

Eric welcome to the group. There are a couple spots for the stamping.

Please consider bringing the car out to Bowling Green this year. Your car would be most welcome and I'm thinking we should be able to get it on display for the weekend.

Very cool car. Question-Are there truely unique '89 wheels or are they simply the same as the '90.

They are 89 only wheels.. 89s have a center cap 90s don't THe car came with 91 saw blades though.
"I am close to 101 & Shea" me too!! closer to Cactus though. Probably saw you I was out bid on more than one ZR-1 too!!! Missed the Active, I was only about $70k short on that one.

Would a SeeSnake help?

I looked at a smaller version one of those at Home Depot and though it would be a neat tool for the judging field, but at around $300US I would really need to find a way to use it more then once! Eric

Congratulation on the car. This was a once in a lifetime buy.
I have two motors from the ’89 production run (out of ‘89Z’s). On both motors the vin sequence is stamped on the driver’s side of the motor. There is a vertical portion of the casting just where the bell housing mounts. This will be just above the cat and just below the point where the ground strap bolts to the block. It is the location marked (A) in Jeffvettes’ scan. Can not comment on if it can be seen on the car.
Enjoy the ride, George

I was out changing my oil in the new 90 ZR1 #966, thought I would share this pic of the vin stamp on the block. This is a shot from the passneger side looking upbetween heat shield and fuel filter.....directly in front of where the trans bolts to the block. In the foreground is the fuel filter.....obviously the stamp is upside down.....you can see the "9" in 966

I am wondering if anyone has discovered they have a 4 bolt replacement motor? Surely someone out there has.

One of the motors is from car #10, crushed about 2 years ago. The other I do not recall.
A few points, in case you will drive and need to repair the car. the ‘89’s have a lot of unique parts, parts that were reengineered for the ’90 run. These parts are not necessarily the obvious ones. Examples; PCV is different, the steering shaft is different. The computer used under the dash on the L98 is gone . So all of the wiring is different not only in the engine compartment but under the dash. And the way the engine control systems is done, even though they look like the systems in the ‘90’s, is different. The wires are crossed. And keep hold of that smog sticker, in case the car ever makes it to California.
There a quite a few ’89 wheels out there if you want a second set. But it is next to impossible to find a center console with the power key on it, so treat that like gold. (Even L-98 6-speed ones are not made last I looked.) There is a stash of 8000 LCD crystals around. But the full clusters will only show up in the market once in a blue moon.
There are a few hard core ’89 Z guys around.

I have a source for some 89 wheels and they are for sale. PM me for a phone number as the owner does not use the internet.
Recommend you get a build sheet from the NCM or pull the one from the front suspension. You might also try Jim Minniker for the engineering records for the car. Your dash can be repaired if needed by Tabor, I had my 88 dash rebuilt after frying it by bad troubleshooting. George is a good source for the 89 ecm pin out diagrams and is on a dsl line. I have them but am on a dialup. I had them on the net but the server was stolen with all my posted information. Depending on how the car was used it may have different parts. The 88 Ptype(EX5024) in the graveyard had a prototype 4 bolt in it when it was rescued in 95.
How many miles on the car and does it run.
Will be coming through Az in July with the 88 on way to NCRS National for the American Heritage award. Will be stoping in Tucon to see son so if you are near maybe we can meet and talk cars.
If you are interested in the wheels I can bring them in July as the seller is local, save shipping.

Tyler, I have the build sheet and window sticker from the Museum, I have the dealer invoice from Allied Vauhn (sp?) The car has 21K miles. It appears to be un modified other then the color. I might be taking this to San Jose myself. I have not worked my schedule out that far yet. I will know soon. If not I am in the Metro Phoenix are which is 90 miles north of Tucson. I will try to contact Jim. Any new info is always appreciated.
As it stands now
1. The rear bumper support has 2/22/89 on it
2. The build sheet is dated 3/03/89
3. The pass seat date is 3/14/89
4. The ship date per the dealer/corp invoice is 4/3/89
5. Arrival at the Tech center on 4/6/89
6. Rad Shroud had 34deg on 4/14/89 written on it.
So it appears to have sat for a month after the build sheet was generated which seems unusual to me. Testing/ World reveal in France was the first couple of weeks of March. This was definately not there. It may have been at the SAE North AMerican roll out on 4/18/89
I have not aquired the engine stamp info yet, but I will soon.

OK Thanks to all of your help I found some stamps:
Engine Passenger side: 1219 88 88
Head Passenger Side: 7G88A
Head Drivers Side: 6F88B
With it on the ground I was not able to find driverside stamping (or determine if there was any to begin with)
