View Full Version : New Track Times
A friend called a mentioned there will be 2 C6 ZO6's at the track so got the Z ready and went out.
I wanted to see what i can do next to a C6 ZO6 one stock, the other w/headers filter & tune 496 RWHP i figure i would loose but still wanted to see how hard they pull at the top half of the track.
The stock ZO6 didn't make it,now i knew i had no chance with the moded ZO6,even with my BFG DR's to his F1's and his 496RWHP to my 463RWHP
The KING did me proud i made 3 passes
First pass testing traction:
1.97 60ft
97.31
11.75 @ 124.05
Second Pass:
1.75 60ft
97.56
11.43 @124.22 Got a warning slow it down.
Third Pass:
1.76 60ft
97.83
11.44 @ 124.58 Second Warning Went Home
C6ZO6 ran two 11.90's @ 123,i guess HP doesn't compensate for driver
This is my best MPH i've run.
My best ET was last year 11.35
With front runners hello 126 MPH.
Remember i have stock bottom 350c.i. w/3.45 gears
Pete
P.S.
NJ why did you edit the heads post in CF, did you get the call LOL.

Brad i would rather sacrifice some 1/4 ET for the highway i like going to 60MPH in 1st gear and 155MPH in 4th.
I started with 25 PSI for the first 2 passes,it was good but hitting 2nd and 3rd so hard i was getting tire spin i figure i was loosing some MPH on the 3rd pass went down to 22PSI still got some rubber on the shifts not as much.
First pass was test the track/traction ain't trying to kill myself with a 5k RPM drop without knowing track conditions, last time at this track with same tires had no traction
The first run was 2500 drop, second 3500,third 4200 w/lower tire pressure it hooked real good and got me some bog this is where the 4.10's would help i think 3.73 would be a better choice for now i'll stick with the 3.45's
Suspension is all stock beside the longer rear bolts, the FX switch was on
Sport.
Thanks for the drink but i don't drink alcohol i'll take a Diet Pepsi :)

Pete - Great times, congratulations. That's one hell of a stock block LT5. I've always wondered what the ZR1 could do while keeping the stock block, and displacement.
From your discription of the mods, it seemed to me like the car is set up more for racing on the street, from a roll, than a hardcore drag car. But that dream top end that you've built begs for the rest of the car to be tuned to the same level.
You say your best e.t. last year was 11.35 Do you think it could dip into the tens without losing its highway driveability?
You mentioned "front runners". They would probably be good for a tenth.
More tire, and a shorter gear, would bring your 60ft. time down into the low 1.60's giving at least another tenth and 1/2 - to two tenths.
That means you would be banging on the tens with a stock block ZR1, amazing. A little stock block 350, way ahead of most of the 427 lightweight C6 ZO6's
I love to see one of our cars show the flag against the "latest and greatest". Keep up the great work.

Greybeard,i thought about 10's and here is my conclusion.
When i ran 11.35 it was 1.69 60ft.
I know for every .10 off the 60ft is worth about .167 at the end
so if front runners are worth a tenth at the end of the 1/4 that would've
put me at 11.25 with the same 1.69 60ft now if every tenth at 60ft is
worth .167 at the end then i would need to get a 1.50 60ft to dip in the 10's
With my 3.45 gears a 1.50 60ft may not be possible, but i will try.:)
The other thoughts i have is
1.find another 10-15RWHP then i might be able to do it with a slower then 1.50 60ft
2.minus 100lbs from the car(carbon hood,Laxen rear glass)
3.do both
I prefer #1 only
I do have some ideas to get a little extra power.
I hear a vacuum pump is worth 5-10 RWHP hope it works,i will find out.
The car drives like a stocker except for the slight rumble from the cams.
When driving home from the track it was in 6th gear at 60-65MPH
cruising at around 1500RPM with no issues.
It makes plenty low end torque,on street radials 1st & 2nd are useless.

Yup, weight is definitely a drawback with the Z. If your car weighed what a new C6 ZO6 did, you'd be very close to the tens right now.
As you probably know, Marc H. has a list of gimmicks to drop some weight on the Z. Have you done that stuff?
It would be fun to have a car like the old 2,900 lb. "Snakeskinner", and drop your 350 into it. A definite high 10 sec. car all day long.
I clipped off the mufflers, (same B&B setup you have), like Haibeck does, and gained trap speed , and cut E.T. on my stock motor car.

Great work & driving Pete. Absolutely awesome times for a 350!!

I have done Marc's weight reduction.
Do you remove the mufflers or do you have a cut out.
The reason i ask, you gain twice one for weight those B&B mufflers are heavy and second is flow.
I think my B&B mufflers flow pretty good, never tested,my system is all welded.
I will test a set of the newer B&B mufflers on the dyno soon.

I did do a before and after with the electric water pump i gain no RWHP from what the dyno showed me.
I never really did a before and after on the UD pullies but i'm sure they help some and i also prefer the rotating wieght savings, they are half the wieght of the stock steel pieces.

I'm still trying to optimize.
I don't have a scanner to scan my dyno sheet.
But right now at 3k rpm i make 332 RWTQ lost some over the stock cams,
stock cams it was 345RWTQ @ 3k rpm now i don't know if the BFG DR's rob some power over the GSC's.
If not i wanna try different cam timing with the bigger Intake cams, something i will do over the winter months.

I removed them. You're right, that SS is quite heavy. I pulled the pass. seat and the spare tire too. It allowed me to get my best ever time of 12.06@117mph.(1.76 -60ft.). Not too shabby for a stock motor 91'. This car used to embarrass C5 ZO6's all the time at my local strip. But I'd like to do the top end, like you have, and go hunting C6 ZO6's:)

Wish you had because it would be nice to see if it is worth the expense.
Wish you had because it would be nice to see if it is worth the expense.
I look at it this way i spend almost $3k for headers & exhaust to gain 20 HP
I spend $250 to save
1.dead wieght
2.rotating weight
3.they are UD pullies
If they make 3-5 HP they were worth every penny if not,
then 2 out of 3 ain't bad for the money.
Also it wasn't a worth while mod to spend $200 for dyno time on an item the costs the same as dyno time.

i said before month ago in CF , i post thread saying that ZR1 will embarrass 06z06, but all get angry and hate me :p .
i know what Zr1 and LT5 is capable of !
listen, why dont you try open headers and see the gain, and ET after that.
i want someone to do that and see what our Zr do in track!:icon_scra

Hadi, i find it funny how some still think small ports, with exhaust backpressure will make more power. LMAO
I know a 350ci LT5 can make very streetable 500 RWHP.

Actually, I have done that. After I ran the car with headers, no cats, 3" X pipe, and B&B 3" exhaust with no mufflers, I pulled the exhaust off and left open headers. The result, a reduction in trap speed, (therefore power).
I think it's because the ZR1 headers are relatively short, and also because I think the X pipe is really effective at increasing power.
The stock motor car seemed to run best with headers, no cats, X pipe and 3" exhaust pipes, no mufflers.
And a bonus, the sound was enough to scare the sh*t out of the guys I was running against.:)

Wish you had because it would be nice to see if it is worth the expense.
My guess is that it's minimal. Considering that the rotating weight savings gained by installing a lightweight flywheel is probably ten times the weight savings of all those underdrive pulleys.
Haibeck claims that a light flywheel gains about 15 "dynamic" horsepower, so even when you take the "underdrive" aspect into account I would be surprised if you gained as much as 3 or 4 h.p. with the pulleys.
But those little things add up. Witness all of Pete's efforts tweaking the stock block 350. All those small improvements add up to some *** kicking power, instead of just opening your wallet to buy a whole new bottom end with big bore, and a stroker crank.
That's why it would be great if Pete would put the car on a diet and tweak the suspension to get those 60ft. times down. A ten second stock block ZR1 would be phenominal.
