Got my intake and injector housings back today. Cleaned them up tonight and installed the IH O Rings... Its a shame nobody will be able to see Pete's porting job. Thanks Pete... Cant wait to get it all back together... hopefully this weekend.

I am well aware this is a slippery slope.... I'm hoping this combined with a 4:10 rear gear will satisfy my needs... hoping... :p

After the heads comes the cams swap....
That is some beautiful porting work!

Pete's top-end porting, AND 410s! It will be a totally different animal! You won't believe the difference, the first time you "whack" it (as Pete says!).

This is how the LT5 should have come from the factory. I think that is safe to say, looking at the gen-II and then the gen-III versions. Without cams or TB porting, mine dynoed at 432 rwhp (approx 508 @ the crank) without changing the stock idle or mpg, up from ~327 wheel hp stock. That's quite a trick - and testimony for Marc and Pete as to some of the advantages of the DOHC platform.=D>

I'm strangely curious about getting a 4:10 gear.

Where are we sourcing them nowadays and what do you have to do to recalibrate the speedometer?

My '93 has a Dana 4.09 gear. Came that way when I got the car.

I believe you need to change the speedometer gear in the transmission to re calibrate. Not 100% sure on that.

I'm interested too. Talked to Steve @ Crossed Flags, and he only recommended up to 3.90s as he no longer has a good source for the 4.10s. And yes, you have to change the speedo gear to correct for the rear gears. I know Haibeck lists them.

I believe Marc also has an electronic device to correct the speedo reading.
Recently I installed 4.10s in my 92, but due to the 19” Z06 wheels on the rear, I continue to use the stock speedo. My speedo reads about 2-3mph higher than actual as measured by GPS. The combo of gears and taller wheels/tires comes out to be about a 3.53:1. Close enough for horseshoes and handgrenades in my book. Not worth the. Other

I believe the 4.09/4.10 option is a little over hyped.

It is better for city driving, but you will not get to 60mph in first gear anymore and if your car makes good power hooking up in first is going to be difficult.

If my car did not come with the gears I would focus on adding more power.

I really have been thinking hard about the 4.10 gears as of late. My first 91 had the Watson headers along with the very free flowing early B&B 3 in. exhaust, custom chip and 4.10 gears. I loved how it felt. Current 91 Marc did all the porting along with goodbye to the secondary system, light weight flywheel, and larger throttle body. I guess I should take it to the track with the sticky drag radials and see how it runs.

Thanks John enjoy.

I would suggest installing the intake first before you decide on 4.10 gears.

I have 4.10s and I love them, a little more shifting but it really livened up the car.
I am headed over to Pete's in a couple weeks for a set of cams! Whoo Hoo!

Oh yeah!

Cams will add another 15 - 25 hp?

Flyman 27

Well, my exhaust is presently choked down at the resonator. I am replacing that now while I am getting prepared. So the project will add power by freeing up the exhaust (estimated at 20 hp). Plus I will get a good gain from the cams, so I should be running pretty good by the time this project ends!

No doubt! Im hoping for 400 whp with headers, 3" exhaust, the fresh IH & Plenum porting and prom recalibration. Unfortunately, I will have to leave it to a guess, no dynos around here. One day Ill get it on one :o

AND...good luck seeing 400 rwhp at 10,000 feet amsl! I was amazed at the difference in seat of the pants between Denver @ 5280 (mile high) and Bailey where I lived at ~8500 amsl. But, take heart! its ALL RELATIVE! The % increase is more or less constant. So, the lower the elevation, the better the dyno readings.

400RWHP is still a very respectable amount of power. The problem is everyone is so spoiled with the big #s put out by modern sports/super/hyper-cars. Dodge is one of the leading causes with the Hellcat (707HP), but you've got to admire how they've milked it for all it was worth and giving people what they want. "Who cares if it's a fat pig on a old chassis with skinny tires? It's got a supercharged Hemi with 707HP!"

Well, Im sure the day will come when I will crave for more.... for now, this segment is done. Car started up really well, and to my surprise, idled perfectly.

I had a tiny fuel leak at the block where the lines meet the rail... a quick twist of the ratchet, all dry.

Took her out for a few easy shakedown runs and was able to add the final quart of coolant in between.

After lunch, I took her out of town and woke her up a bit. Overall the car feels similar power wise. What I did notice immediately is the throttle response is sharper than it was at around 3000 rpm and up. When hitting 6000 to 7000 rpm, it seemed to be able to get there easier and hold the power better than before....(if that makes sense)....

The improvement is tangible and I'm happy with the results. Here she is all back together wearing a polished throttle body now... I got bored while she was apart waiting for things to get done + the paint was peeling off it...

Thanks to Pete and all of you guys who helped me out answering questions and PM's.

The concern on my end is that I cannot find OEM Dana gears in 4.10. I'm not sure I trust another gear set that hasn't been tested and proven. If there is a quality set available, I'd be interested in the details.

Regards,

Steve

I’ve installed several of these Mopar Viper 4:10 gear sets p\n P5007043 manufactured by Dana Spicer
http://www.moparonlineperformance.com/product-p/p5007043.htm
They are best 4:10 gear set available for the ZR-1. A number of members here are running them.

Have one of Phil’s 4.10 diffs. Expertly done. My set up is a bit different since I’m running 345/19’s in back, but it turns out so is Phil.

Same here. I bought a used diff and Phil rebuilt it for me with the 4.10 Viper gears, rebuild kit and new clutch plates. Also an opportunity to install C-Beam plates. Nice and quiet. Perfect upgrade for my mostly stock car.

Very true...People are hung up on numbers..A lot dont realize how much weight plays a factor..

Watch some roll races of 3,200 lb vettes versus chargers and mustang....Vette giving up 1-2 hundred HP and still pulling away...Aero also is a huge factor as well..
