View Full Version : Shelby wheels brake upgrade

Need definitive answers from folks on what the options are for front brake upgrades with Shelby wheels. The two options I'm aware of are:
C5 brakes: Will have to move center of wheel to outside and use spacer. Inexpensive option for brakes (I actually already have full C5 setup except caliper mounts), but if I'm going to have the wheels taken apart, I'm going to get them refinished at the same time. For those that have done this, does anyone have pics? Very interested to see how the wheels fit in relation to fenders. Also, what size spacers are needed? Alternately, has anyone thought of grinding down the calipers to clear (not sure if it's even an option based on how much would need to be removed)?
Wilwood Superlite kit: I've heard that this will fit, but I also saw someone on Facebook say they had clearance issues with Shelby wheels. It appears there are two different versions of this kit: a 12.88" rotor setup and a 14" rotor setup. Can someone confirm if either of these will clear the Shelby wheels "as is" (center face mounted inward (behind bolt lip))?

C5:
I assume you mean you have the Calipers and their associated brackets but are not using C4 to C5 adapters (I have seen this before)
That said, you will need to move the Centers out on the fronts to clear, you will also need a 3/16 minimum spacer.. I had C5 brakes with Shelbys
Wilwood Superlites (are these the Narrow Superlites)? I know the 12.88" narrow kit will work with centers in either spot. I have the NSL Wilwoods on my car (12.88") and originally had the centers on the inside, but moved to the outside to get the new tires I have to tuck better under the fender..
I also know the Standard SuperLites will need a spacer and be on the outside to keep the tire in more
With your C5 rears, I am guessing they should fit but I currently run the OEM C4 rears. If I ever buy that C5 conversion set-up for a drum parking brake, I will run C5 calipers in the rear
hope that helps and makes sense

Correct, I have the C5 front setup sitting on a shelf, but have not ordered the custom mounting brackets for bolting them to a C4. I wasn't planning on doing anything with the rears at present.
Here are the two options listed by Wilwood on their site:
https://www.wilwood.com/BrakeKits/BrakeKitSearch?year=1991&make=Chevrolet&model=Corvette&option=C-4+w%2f+HD+Brake+Option+13%22+Front+Rotor&axle=Front+Kit
Both say "Narrrow Superlite".
To be clear, I'm just looking at upgrading the fronts at present.

The 12.88 will work, that is what I have currently.. Centers can be on the inside out outside of the barrel

I do not think the C5 brakes are worth the trouble.

Thanks, that's the kind of feedback I was looking for. I got them for a steal, so I should be able to sell them easily for at least what I have in them.

???
Anyway, I'll sell of the C5 setup I never installed, and just buy the Wilwood 12.88" setup for the front.

Any idea if the Wilwoods will fit without issues if you have 17" Fikse FM5's? I have C5 calibers in front and had to grind them down and use a 1/8" spacer to get them to fit with the FM5. I had no issues with the aftermarket A-Molds fitting over the C5 brake upgrade.
