I'm out at SEMA looking at the 6.2 liter LT5 in the ZR1 C7? I didn't know they offered the LT5 in a C7? You can buy it as a crate package with ECM for $20,000 on up. I didn't realize they called this overhead valve engine a LT5 ? it's supercharged it does have 16 injectors with direct injected keep in mind. 755 horsepower is pretty impressive. I'm mildly offended they're calling it the LT5.8477847884798480

Wonder if it would fit in a C4/ZR-1
w/o a whole lot of backyard engineering?

The rest of us are pissed they defiled the LT5 name w an OHV, in block cam motor.

Why on earth does GM insist on reusing engine codes? What is the purpose of a code identifying an engine, if it's not unique to the particular engine?

Remember the ZL1 engine Corvette of which only 2 were produced. Now they have the ZL1 engined Camaro.

Remember the ZR-1 Corvette from the early 70’s. Now you have our C4 ZR-1 cars.

All marketing hype.

Zr-1 is a flagship model, like an M5 vs 540i or CL65 AMG vs CL600. Makes no sense to not continue using the brand name. None of them do however re-use motor codes. They might re-use a letter, like BMWs letter S in M-cars (S62B50 for example), but not an entire code.

Doesn't make sense to me. Doesn't the code identify the engine?? Not any more.

So I had lunch at SEMA today with a engineer from the NEW LT5 development branch and he said "it's marketing it's all about the marketing." He's had many bench racing Round Table meetings going back to 2015 involving long conversation with the GM brass about the dilution of the market with the use of the ZR1 and LT5 logos as he called it. He informed me they spend millions of dollars on Market Research, product Association and population Dynamics studies. That this is good for all parties because of the history of the LT5 success and performance which is a testament to our cars and we should hold on to them..... I thanked him for lunch and his time then I ended it with "I'm not buying what you're selling and it's a good sales pitch for an engineer but unless your NEW LT5 is a DOHC motor it's not a LT5." He nodded with acknowledgement smiled shook my hand and thanked me for my input..... I know it's not going to make a bit of difference but I felt it needed to be said.

I'm surprised they haven't used L88 yet. But GM can't help but reuse what they figure the public can identify with from the past. Why not? Hell the Chrysler Hemi isn't a true Hemi like the original. They sold the LS6 as a crate engine for many years. Then in 92 you had the LT1 come back. The Trans Am still used the WS6 package and Ram Air returned. It's kind of like when Hollywood does a remake of an old movie. Hey it sold before lets do a remake of this or that. Since I'm not up on Ford do they reuse designations like GM? Do they have a Cobra Jet or Super Cobra Jet?

You did the right The fact that they never acknowledged or touted the LT5 as the only production motor to ever go 5000mi in 24hrs? For Pete Sake.

I totally agree w/ you - TOTALLY. AND, as Dom point out, GM never officially acknowledges the LT5 or the records the ZR-1 set with that motor. To glom onto the name and reputation and infer it to something else entirely is an example of an old, cheap advertising bait and switch gimmick. I and most Corvette enthusiast see through it and, frankly, find it a little(?) disgusting.

Who cares what they call it; I just want to drive it!

They really don’t have any imagination to come up with a new name.
Like Dodge calling their late model engines Hemi even though they do not have hemisphereical heads.

5,000 miles in 24 hours?

5,000 miles/24 hours = 208 mph.

No.

My mistake. I’m an enthusiast.

Three outright World Records: 5000-kilometers at 175.710 mph, 24-hours at 175.885 and 5000-miles at 173.791, plus four other FIA International marks in class A-G2-C10. Immediately after the event, the drivers and crew signed the underside of the hood. The WRR ZR-1 went on a promotional tour and then was donated to the National Corvette Museum where it remains, today.

I Googled the new "HEMI" and in fact the chamber is NOT hemispherical as in dayz of old...but close! In fact, except for the dual ignition (plugs) and half as many valves, it appears close to a 'more familiar' pent-roof design. (Pent-roof: Wonder where we've seen THAT before???;))

The REAL HEMI. From my '68 Road Runner--sold long ago, RIP.--Bob

My Road Chicken was a lot of fun.First car out of college bought used for $2,000. And unfortunately sold for about the same when I ran out of money. Only thing that ever could keep up with me in street racing (in my youth) was a 4.9 liter Ferrari and I had five guys in the car. Interestingly, the 0-60 time for the Hemi Road Runner in Car & Driver was listed at 4.8 seconds, the same as the 1990 and up ZR-1. Quarter mile time was 13.5 at 105. Not bad for the day....--Bob

I drove a 70 Boss 302 back in the day. I’d always get beat in the last part of a quarter mile. But would beat big blocks off the line... I finally switched to a 68 Corvette 427 convertible with roll bar, scatter shield, line lock and electric fuel pump. Wish I still had both cars...

I had a 70 AAR Cuda. Boss 302 was no competition. I could never beat the 454 Chevelle, except on the strip for top eliminator. He smoked off the line and never made up the spot. These were the good old days where a “spot” was how far in front of the starting line instead of a tree. The Chevelle guy day it was seeing the *** end of my Cuda with slicks out in front and was afraid he couldn’t catch me. I still only beat him by a fender.

Was it a 340 street AAR or the track 305 track AAR? I don’t recall having trouble smoking the street AAR Jerry... The track versions were also no match for the Racing Boss 302 in the 1970 TransAm series, which Ford won.... [emoji41]

340 Mopars with 3 speed automatic Torqueflite transmissions were a stout combination for the street back in day. Usually got the better launches out of the grip challenged street tires available then. Had to catch them on the big end if you had the power.

So I can count on you to become a paddle shifter when the C8 comes out.

I do miss the 4-speed Hurst shifter with the T-handle on the Boss. Although, I have driven the Z over 70K miles, I still miss that 4-speed...
