View Full Version : Ignition key copying
The key copier guy told me there is a chip in my key (VATS) and I need a chipped key to replace
Are the keys specific to the LT5 or will any blank key off eBay work
Thank you.

There is like 14 different resistor chips , most dealers have the reader to get you the correct key , you can get it cut anywhere !

Use and Ohm meter and measure the resistance of the black pellet.
1. Key Codes.

1 in 15 chance that it will work. you need to determine resistor chip value from your old key.

Ecklers has VATS keys by code...…..Vats Corvette Keys by Code (https://www.ecklerscorvette.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=vats+key&x=24&y=15)
Use and Ohm meter and measure the resistance of the black pellet (resistance from one side of key to other across black pellet).

Take the key that works by a GM dealer and ask them to "DROP IT' in their VATS Interrogator. That will ID the resistance code.

Last year I paid $35 at
the local Chevy stealership
for one. Took them 5 minutes
to make it.
Could be lots worse, $325 and a lot of
BS (proof of ownership etc) for a replacement
key at the local Teutonic car emporium ☹️

ACE hardware has a chip reader in their key dept. They read my key & sold me spares that work perfectly.

Hi all, I tried copying my ignition key about a year ago as I only received one when I bought the car.
I determined resistor value from my old key and ordered a replacement online and got the key cut. Car fired up perfectly and drove it about 20 mins then turned off the car. Came back a few mins later, key in ignition but no start. Seemed to be a VATS issue from what I read so I left the car about 20 mins. Tried with my old key and it started fine.
Has this happened to anybody else? I have refused to use the copied key in case this happens again.

I bypassed my pellet by adding the correct resistance resistors to the wiring under the column. Made a few keys as spares. But as suggested just need to find out the resistance And order the correct key.
