View Full Version : Winter mods...

Since the white stuff is piling up around us, I figured it's time to start the winter mods soon. I'm going to pull the motor to clean everything and port the heads, intake, injector housings, do the coolant bypass, headers, and a different catback to start. I've been reading a ton of posts but didn't see about the gaskets. Do you buy the gaskets oversized already or do you have to trim them? Is the throttle something to send out to have oversized as well? Most likely going to order the top end overhaul from Jerry's in a few days. I'd love to do the cams and was thinking about them since it's out but hard to get a idea on cost with the 4 cams and lifters. I've seen some regrinds for the $14-1600 range. What options are out there? Don't want to go to crazy yet..... maybe stroke it in a few years. I love the 397 I built in the GS. Thanks!!
Our gaskets have increased ports diameters which will eliminate the need for trimming if the port work matches the gaskets. It is recommended to use the gasket as a template.
Plenum Gaskets: read about port size

Injector Housing Gaskets :read about port size

Depending on the port work style performed, if the bifurcation between the ports is removed, its a simple matter to use a pair of scissors to cut out the gasket center section with a straight cut tangent to the port o.d. of both ports.

If you are interested in cams, I would suggest:
1. Drive a ZR with that mod
2. Talk to Pete.

Actually drove a 95 a few weeks ago with ported top end, intake cams and stock heads and it was impressive, even with the stock heads...

Started to pull it apart today. Pulled the trans, clutch, cats, most of the top end. Found the vacuum line was disconnected and capped for the fuel pressure regulator by po? All the lines under the intake look good, Few more than the LT4 :):) Need to start the since ya list.

Would love to but don't want to go to crazy yet...
Anyone tell me why the op would have capped off the Fuel pressure regulator?
Regular Helms for a 94 has all the ZR-1 info in it correct?
With doing headers that does away with with all the AIR tubing, What about the EGR? I don't have to worry about emissions. I assume that can all be adjusted in the tune?
Speaking of tune, Who's a trusted tuner close to NE PA that can do a dyno tune?
Thanks:cheers:

Could be that the fuel pressure regulator diaphragm had failed resulting in plenum vacuum sucking in extra fuel and messing with AFR. Another reason may be the previous owner falsely believed disconnecting the pressure regulator and resulting increased fuel pressure equated to more hoses.

When you get a reprogrammed chip to optimize for headers ask EGR to be programmed out.

Definitely a fun project, I'm not a bodyman but it's coming along.. I forget the specs on the motor since its been together for a while now. My Dad is crazy with carbs. More the better, 56 Belair vert has a 400 with 2/4s, the flat head has 4, he has 2 old chevy intakes that have 4 and 6 singles on them.

The Bel Air and the Ford, and particularly both engines, look simply fantastic!!!
That Flathead is to die for if you lived in the 50's and 60's!!!
Not that I don't love the others, but those two are over the top!
I agree that a father and son project makes it all even more special!!!
Best of luck with all of the builds!

Got the ported heads, upper intake and injector housings back. Still have to get powdercoated though. Have the reground cams, lifters, gaskets, emblems, bolts, rebuilt injectors, sealants, oils, headers, catback, and I think everything else to start putting the car back together.

Finally could update this post. been a short crazy summer with work, Loosing my 10 year old Mastiff, Getting a puppy, and working on the car. Finally got the car running good. I'd like to thank Dominic (XfireZ51) on helping me with the tuning. He sent me his logging equipment to email him data logs. He would send me a updated file with each log. The drivability of the car is nice and smooth now. Anyone that needs some remote tuning give him a call. I now need to get it on the dyno to finalize the top end before I end up in jail. lol Should get that done after Labor Day.
I'd also like to thank,
Jerry, for all the parts and gaskets I needed.
Mark Haibeck for some more parts.
Carter, for some bling.
Phil Wasinger, for the timing tools.
Lee Gaffigan for tons of help, advice and cams and bailing me out with a fuel pressure regulator.
Great service from everyone!
I've read so much on the forum it's a great resource for these cars.

To finish the thread I meet Dennis Derr at the dyno to finalize the top end tuning today. Ended up at 430-431 RWHP, and 378 RWTQ. The car drives
Perfect with no issues, nice smooth graph. Thanks again to everyone for the help, I really appreciate it. Put 200 miles on the car today and the only issue was my anolog water temp guage took a crap on the way home. Digital works fine, hopefully just the sensor.

Beautiful, great running car! Smooth idle. Relatively quiet exhaust. A real sleeper! Dyno's AFR meter was not very cooperative, so ignore those numbers. Nice build Rich!

Thanks for clarifying that Dennis. I wondered if the WB was not very accurate.
12:1 seemed pretty fat for the numbers you guys got.

Thanks again Dennis, your cars no slouch! Once I get back from vacation I'll try to scan and load the sheet. Not sure now with photobucket getting greedy.
Dom I think i saw my AFR gauge was at 12.8-13.0 on the top end. I was focusing on the tach and water temps. I should have video taped the gauge.

That would make sense. Its a reason to bring your own WBO2. You never know what the dyno shop has done and what tailpipe they stuck it into.
