I have been reading the thread on the clutch replacement for our Z but that started me thinking of the transmission. With the NOS ZF's supply about dried up and no one seems to be reproducing the syncro's, has anyone looked into a replacement 6 speed gear box for the ZR-1? It seems like once we run out of parts the ZF may need a replacement. I talked to a rep from Tremec and they have a transmission but the shifter hole needed to be modified.

When did they run out of synchro's?

Sam (SAM/CH ZR-1) has been replacing the ZF's with a 6 speed closed ratio gearbox. Try to get him to post up. Jerry might be able to connect with him.

Hi Rich,

A few years back I talked to the guys at Tremec at Carlyle and Bill B. about doing this. it's feasible but not really sure how much the cost is to fab up a mounting for the cbeam and adapt the tranny to the LT5

I don't really think the ZF boxes are really that scarce, just the input shaft and bellhousing. But the modern boxes have really great strength, and great gear ratios.

Many of the brothers "stashed" another ZF when GM dumped them at 1880 a pop a while back. Every now and then they surface.

One of the tremec "godzilla" boxes had multiple input points for the shifter up top and looks like it would physically fit, the challenge again the lash up to the ZF

Another option (I know sacrilidge!!) is a modern paddle shifted auto. They aren't like the old slush boxes but will never provide the driving experience I crave.

Time to go get the LSV!!

Yeah Ron, I just have my original black tag ZF that came out of my 90 and it has a bad syncro. I don't believe they are being made anymore and I know Bill has them, but they are pricey. Hell it would cost me $2500.00+ to have Bill rebuild this ZF. I was looking for a cheaper alternative but I guess I will just hang on to it just to have the input shaft and tail housing. I guess you can still find stand ZF's and just swap the input shaft.

The LSV looks good, may take a run down to Dempsey's on Sat.
