Check out this review of an old Toyota by Regular cars. You may have to struggle thru the beginning but the explanation of the intake system makes me think it is very similar to our arrangement with primary and secondary runners.

The Ford/Yamaha 3.0L motor had similar setup w it's "bundle of snakes" intake.

I liked that motor but was not aware that only 1/2 the snakes were alive until needed.

I owned several of them from 90-94 and then the V-8 version, which I didn't care for. There were secondary throttle actuators there that opened up the shorter runners for top end.

The 1992-95 CPI 4.3 V6 found in the S-10 SS and ZR2/Highrider and some of the vans also had a variable geometry manifold. It was rated at 190-200hp@4500rpm/260lb/ft torque@3400-3600rpm.
The ECM opens and closes a door at a certain rpm which helps to provide low rpm torque, while still allowing for upper rpm power

In 1996 GM went to the CSFI L35(Vortec) with a standard intake manifold and CSFI spider injection with true sequential injection. In the fullsize trucks it was rated at 200hp@4600rpm/260lb/ft torque@2800rpm. This engine would out accelerate the TBI 350(200hp@4000rp,/300lb/ft torque@ trucks when installed in an equally equipped truck(gearing, cab and bed configuration)

I made it to the 60 second mark.
