View Full Version : EZ-Pass with our windshield???

Has anyone experienced the EZ-Pass not working properly with our windshield?
I try to hold it through the opening at the lower end, sometimes it reads it and sometimes it doesn't. Trying different speeds through the lane, like really very slow. Was wondering if it will read in the "regular" spot with our coated windshields???
Thanks for any info........

won't work. Heard rumors of this from some of the NY guys years ago and found out myself two years ago. hold it out the window or put a towel on the dash and put it in the cut out. In pa if you have the car registered you don't need the transponder

No problem with mine, with or w/o ZR-1 windshield. I only use the painted top, (read: not mirrored), and have never placed it in the windshield "window". But, "your mileage may vary", depending on "factors", I recon.

FWIW... Paul.

painted top, zr-1 windshield, on my way to carlise three years ago, no light. ended up having my passenger hold it out the window. two years ago I put a towel on the dash with the transponder and all was well. PA's may just suck, which is entirely possible

I ran into a brother with the license plate unit strapped under the hood. He said it worked fine.

I have the mirrored top on but with the sun shade installed, don't know if that makes a difference or not.....

I think you almost have to come to a stop where the overhead "reader" is at for it to pick up your signal.......good idea with the towel.

that is another good idea, but having only one transponder for 3 vehicles now, would have to install & uninstall after each use. No need for a second transponder as no two of our vehicles use the EZ-Pass at the same time.

I have a square of velcro taped to the spot on the dash near the opening. The 3M dual-lock style of heavy duty all plastic interlocking tape is strong enough to hold a radar detector. It would easily hold the ez-pass and could be removed a few hundred times before you need to replace the velcro patch. I can also attest that it doesn't leave residue when you peel it off.

thought about that but I didn't want to stick anything to the dash or glass

I usually hold it near the opening, but it appears that some of our "readers" do not work properly at the toll plaza's, as I just got off the phone with PA EZ-Pass to make some payment adjustments that they owe me. Two times it didn't even read the transponder with my 82 "dd".
A lesson to be learned, check your statement each and every month to make sure everything is correct......

I have a Valentine One that sticks to the glass at the opening, hard wired up through the center speaker or vent opening. I put my I-pass unit under it but protruding forward of the detector itself. The Radar detector holds it in place and it works fine. Easy to swap out the detector and the I-pass unit when I switch cars.--Bob

FWIW, here in North Texas we have similar technology called TollTag. They come in 2 varieties: Old style is a plastic case roughly the size of an iphone 4 that velcros to the windsheild. The newer style is a smaller sticker with an RFID thingie sandwiched between the layers that attaches to the windshield with self-adhesive backing.

I have the latter on the ZR-1, mounted near the top of the windshield so that it is mostly blocked from the driver's view by the rearview mirror. It works fine every time, with either top installed.

The towel is so when we're on MM3 that dang thing won't slide from A-pillar to A-pillar as Gunny tries to straighten those curves!

OT: Robert brought up MM3 in the Rockies...You'll need a real sticky towel for that, I can promise ya!

Sounds like TX reader IS radio frequency, but I think some states' readers are by light, i. e., wavelength (λ) , which WOULD be hampered by polarization in W/S or Glasstop, depending on wavelength...

(missed Physics class THAT week) ;)

Could that be me? Have one for each vette, tie wrapped at the firewall for the C4s and velcroed at the radiator in the C6, Works great and invisible!

I can never understand this. I would be constantly leaving it in the vehicle I wasn't driving :censored: Each of my vehicles have their own! Doesn't cost anymore except for maybe a deposit?
