What are the options here?
Lag screw? Open a keyhole saw access hole in the side, to hold a nut? (the latter has little appeal, for more reasons than just one).
In theory, a perfectly round hole doesn't weaken the material, but in practice, well ... practice and theory sometimes don't go one hand in the other...
Ideas here?

See if you can find a nutsert that will fit the hole. Many options.

Nut insert would probably work there Steve, but the reeding might not get THIS job done...
I'm already on it here. Y'all gettin' ready to see some brains in action ;) (and never mind who I'm borrowin' the brains from :p ).

Oh yeah - you squared out the hole, with a 3-sided file / rasp. Never mind that it's not square - THAT works out even better, as you'll see below here.

...to put in a carriage bolt:

Then get a nut on it, and run the nut down to lock the square into the [out-of-perfect] square hole.

Now that's a very inventive fix.
