Borla exhaust has been on my z since I have owned it. I love the sound, especially as rpm pass 2000 to 2500 under light acceleration. Anytime a car is along side me drivers usually take notice when I run through that rpm range. My question is does stock exhaust and after market exhaust have the same or similar menacing sound at that rpm range?=D>

I have the SW's and no cats. Just need to install my corsa's. What catback are you running?

I have a Borla exhaust and also love the sound.
The problem is the resonator REALLY robs you
of HP. I replaced the resonator with an X-pipe
(and headers) and WOW! Yep, resonance
around 1800 rpm but for me that's OK.

Stock exhaust makes NO noise whatsoever; far too quiet for these cars, in my opinion. Even a stock exhaust with the resonator removed makes virtually no noise. The aftermarket systems all sound different but all add sound over stock.

I just installed a Borla catback on mine. It makes a "tinny wraaaa" noise at about 3k rpm. As opposed to the normal "low rumble". Worse when cold, and really short. As in a space of maybe 200-300 rpm. Never hear it otherwise and once it warms up it is lessened.
Is that the noise you are talking about? #wonderingifIcanfixit

It makes a "tinny wraaaa" noise at about 3k rpm.

That sounds like a hardware rattle to me, from here anyway. Our car is a Borla with mix of piping (headers, no resonator, kludged cats) but there's nothing tinny about it, inside or out of the car. Does have quite the drone at times from idle to 2400 or so. Of course I've only heard it from outside the car a couple times.

Cheers,
- Jeff

Yep, "tinny wraaaa" sounds like a loose heat shield to me. I've had problems with those on both of my Vettes. It will generally only occur at a very narrow and specific RPM range.

Don't know what it could be - there are no heat shields on this one. But Yeah that's kinda what it sounds like. Have to see if I can get a vid of it here in a day or two.. I got under the car and retightened all the bolts thinking that might be it after having driven it several miles but that didn't change it a bit. The only thing I can even imagine I might have done different is that I used a new "old" header collector gasket on the passenger side flange since the stock one that was on there was torn up when I took off the stock one. The gasket I had matched the holes so I figured it was good??

I was not complaining about the sound it makes 2000 to 2500. It is a great sound and folks outside take notice of the car realizing that maybe this c4 is something different. (My ZR-WON plates help). I wish that GM had made the outside look as different as the engine looks!:fahne::dancing

I'm pleased that our Z's appear almost as though they are just another C 4. The surprise and jaw dropping facial expressions of challengers makes the sameness of the 'Vettes worthwhile. It's almost a "I can't believe this is happening" experience for them.

The modded ZR1's put the C6 ZO6 in the rear view mirror. Now that is a jaw dropper

My modded ZR1 has run neck and neck against my head/cam etc. C6 ZO6.

Gibby........I have to check out these DynoMax VT mufflers. Call me old I dont give a crap but sometimes I want QUIET.

My stock motor ZR-1 never lost to the early C5 ZO6's. Then came the '02 version, and I couldn't keep up with them.
Now I'd have to go for one of Marc's 500+hp. tunes just to keep up with the base motor C7.
The King can't stay on top of the hill forever. :(

Borla is the sweetest sounding exhaust I've ever had on the car. Performance?...not so much.

The stock exhaust is pretty quiet, until you get into the 3500 to 4000 mark when it starts making pretty good sound.

When I was running the stock exhaust at the drag strip, I was told there was a big difference in sound between the ZR-1 with the stock exhaust and other Vettes.

I don't think it would make someone really take note of the car on the street, though, like what the OP is describing with his system.

Shame they made the square tail lights mainstream.

If borla exhaust is somewhat restrictive. Would it be similar to stock exhaust in terms of restriction?

Just add cutouts and you can go from mild to wild sound with the push of a button...Bob

Bob,

Do you still have the stock resonator however?

The blue car will have the same setup Bob. Looking forward too that.
The white car had the same setup but with the big flowmaster mufflers , again too noisey. I want quiet , untill the right time. Then let her rip.

I see I'll have to loose the spare........maybe use QTP's oval units.

Hi Frank--I will be working with Marc later this summer on getting the cutouts into the position that Tony D has his manual ones. I would like to remount the spare carrier and I think it can be done, at least based on my preliminary research. If we can get it done I am sure Marc will let his customers know. I looked at the low profile units from QTP for positioning along the pipes just before they bend around the spare but I would rather re use my round ones and put them farther back. We'll see. Also I saw your car at Marc's when we were there--looked good. --Bob

I am curious as to the sounds of Borla, Corsa, Magnaflow, and B&B. I heard the B&B was loud and at cruise has a resonance that can get annoying. The car I am looking at has B&B cat back and in case I did not like it I would like to hear the others on a ZR1. I like a nice deep growl but don't want my ears to be ringing after driving it on the highway for extended periods of time. Does anyone have sound clips of their exhaust?

Another system you may want to consider is what I have on mine. I just completely opened mine up; stock resonator replaced with an h-pipe and stock mufflers replaced with Corvette Central LT-tipped muffler eliminators...the only "mufflers" are the cats. The sound is unbelievable. I just giggle like a frigging idiot when I get on it. Surprisingly, there is almost no resonance on the highway. I planned on this being temporary but now I want to keep it. HIGHLY recommended, unless maybe your car is a daily driver? I will try to get a sound clip of it up.

Thanks. I'm hoping I just like the B&B bc I dont want to put any more money into the car for a while, unless someone wanted to trade .

Don't want to put any more money into it? A ZR-1? I wish you luck, my friend.

Well, not for a while, it just had $20,000 worth of work, paint, and restoration so I'm hoping I won't need to put anymore in for a while. From what I was told it should be like new, and I have 2 great guys from the forum coming to check it out with me!
