View Full Version : Some questions on my new ZR-1.....

Roadster

I have a list of questions, I know there is a wealth of info here, but would like to know what other owners have done or do pertaining to these issues....

1- do you or have you used any fuel additive? I have used and still do, Lucas fuel injector cleaner in the 82, and it works fine, no problems or issues.
2- what tire pressure do you use in the front and rear tires? I have always run 30-31 lbs in whatever tires I have had, so is that the norm for us?
3- have you ever used or mixed Sunoco racing fuel (high octane) with your fuel, like maybe adding a galon every once in awhile?
4- do you run anything less than 93 octane, have you used 92 octane? I have both available.
5- an oil question....do you still use Mobil 1 or have you switched to another brand?
6- how about air filters....what do you use now?

That's all I can think of for now, thanks for any info.....I am enjoying the ride, it feels so good rolling down the road in a ZR-1........:-D:-D:-D

You will get many different opinions with those questions - but here are mine. From what I understand - any fuel additives are not recommended. If you still have the catylytic converters - you won't want to mix any race gas with the premium either. 92 or 93 should be fine. I use Mobil 1 just like I do in all my other vehicles. I have a. K&N air filter on mine - just because I also have those on all my vehicles. The factory paper filters are pretty good from what I have read though. Google up "ZR-1 Specialist" for Marc Haibecks site - lots of info there. And welcome!

Stabilizer at the end of season.

2- what tire pressure do you use in the front and rear tires? I have always run 30-31 lbs in whatever tires I have had, so is that the norm for us?

28-29 lbs.
3- have you ever used or mixed Sunoco racing fuel (high octane) with your fuel, like maybe adding a galon every once in awhile?

I used to use an octane booster, Marc Hiebeck tells me our engines are not octane limited, so now I carry it in case I can only get 87 octane.

4- do you run anything less than 93 octane, have you used 92 octane? I have both available.

Marc programmed my chip for 91 or better.

5- an oil question....do you still use Mobil 1 or have you switched to another brand?

I've run Amsoil since I bought it 20,000 mile ago. Don't know what the PO used.

6- how about air filters....what do you use now?

Had a K&N in it when I bought it. I just clean it regularly.

That's all I can think of for now, thanks for any info.....I am enjoying the ride, it feels so good rolling down the road in a ZR-1........:-D:-D:-D

thanks for the opinions so far, and yes I just love that car......:)

7- have you switched out the factory chip? what have you switched to?
8- have you disconnected the 1-4 shift? I read that if you go above 1500 r's in first it will eliminate the 1 to 4 shift and go into 2nd gear. It appears to do that for me.
9- what brand oil filters are you using?
10- the small (in length) black molding that attaches to the bottom of the windshield on both the LS & RS, what is the best material to re-attach? do you use super glue, or something else?

I also tighten up all of the very small screws from hoses etc., on the passenger side of the engine, some were very loose.

Also been talking to David from MD who has supplied me with alot of info......and good tips.......thanks David

7- have you switched out the factory chip? what have you switched to?

There is a pole about which chip people have. Marc H wins by a long shot.

8- have you disconnected the 1-4 shift? I read that if you go above 1500 r's in first it will eliminate the 1 to 4 shift and go into 2nd gear. It appears to do that for me.

Marc's chip eliminates this. Gotta be driving like a girl for it to happen anyway. (I'm sure I'll catch some heat for that comment).

9- what brand oil filters are you using?

AC Delco PF-970-C. Good anti drainback valve.

10- the small (in length) black molding that attaches to the bottom of the windshield on both the LS & RS, what is the best material to re-attach? do you use super glue, or something else?

Under the hood?

I also tighten up all of the very small screws from hoses etc., on the passenger side of the engine, some were very loose.

Tint the windows if you can get away with it, really makes the car look sinister. - Steve

Steve, thanks for more tips, yes that molding is under the hood, will have to take a pic......not a big fan of tinting.......to dark for me...lol

11- underhood lights do not come on with the hood open....so I'm assuming that a PO installed a toggle switch, just have to locate it.......

Gordan Killabrew tells me he used to remove them for better under hood ventilation. These should be the same for any C4, so easier to source.

Or he pulled the plugs, my 90 has one on each side in the fender well, not attached to the hood. :handshak:

All great ?s

thanks for the opinions so far, and yes I just love that car......:)

7- have you switched out the factory chip? what have you switched to?
Both to Haibeck.
8- have you disconnected the 1-4 shift? I read that if you go above 1500 r's in first it will eliminate the 1 to 4 shift and go into 2nd gear. It appears to do that for me.
Marc's prom does it
9- what brand oil filters are you using?
GM or Bosh
10- the small (in length) black molding that attaches to the bottom of the windshield on both the LS & RS, what is the best material to re-attach? do you use super glue, or something else?
a small amount of trim adhesive.
11- underhood lights do not come on with the hood open....so I'm assuming that a PO installed a toggle switch, just have to locate it
Most likely the fuse is out, look just over the left side marker. small black fuse holder with cover.

I also tighten up all of the very small screws from hoses etc., on the passenger side of the engine, some were very loose.

1- do you or have you used any fuel additive? I have used and still do, Lucas fuel injector cleaner in the 82, and it works fine, no problems or issues.
use a detergent based fuel injector/intake cleaner such as RedLine or Chevron's Techron

2- what tire pressure do you use in the front and rear tires? I have always run 30-31 lbs in whatever tires I have had, so is that the norm for us?

Tire vendor and road conditions notwithstanding I use 35 on all four.

3- have you ever used or mixed Sunoco racing fuel (high octane) with your fuel, like maybe adding a galon every once in awhile?

Nope.

4- do you run anything less than 93 octane, have you used 92 octane? I have both available.

On flat ground going across the midwest I used 87 with no ill effects.

5- an oil question....do you still use Mobil 1 or have you switched to another brand?

Full synthetic Pennzoil Ultra.

6- how about air filters....what do you use now?

Fram paper for day to day but K&N when going on long trips.

(below is added from other post)

7- have you switched out the factory chip? what have you switched to?

Doug Rippie chip

8- have you disconnected the 1-4 shift? I read that if you go above 1500 r's in first it will eliminate the 1 to 4 shift and go into 2nd gear. It appears to do that for me.

Disabled via Doug Rippie chip

9- what brand oil filters are you using?

Fram

10- the small (in length) black molding that attaches to the bottom of the windshield on both the LS & RS, what is the best material to re-attach? do you use super glue, or something else?

I have no idea.

I also tighten up all of the very small screws from hoses etc., on the passenger side of the engine, some were very loose.

Get in the habit of using Loctite on these and they won't loosen up.

....snip...

Good luck with all. Lots to learn lots of the widely divergent points of view on "keeping the legend alive" and what that means.

their maybe a fuse under the hood in the harness you can pull? It's been some time since I discounted mine.

7- have you switched out the factory chip? what have you switched to?
Marc Haibeck Chip. One of the best things I've done yet.
8- have you disconnected the 1-4 shift? I read that if you go above 1500 r's in first it will eliminate the 1 to 4 shift and go into 2nd gear. It appears to do that for me.
The Haibeck Chip will get rid of that. And it's great to have that stupid thing gone!
9- what brand oil filters are you using?
AC Delco PF970C
10- the small (in length) black molding that attaches to the bottom of the windshield on both the LS & RS, what is the best material to re-attach? do you use super glue, or something else?

Also on the underhood lights - I (and many others) have switches under the hood to turn em on and off. They generally mount on the drivers side in front of the front wheel in the headlight well area. If it is a Mid America switch like mine it is likely to be a red switch on a small black box, velcroed to the well. Here is a post on another likelihood: http://www.zr1.net/forum/showpost.php?p=162318&postcount=15
I believe the 90's didn't have the underhood fuse - 91 and up did. So it may be just as simple as putting the fuse back in on yours. I would also suggest led light bulbs under the hood if you want brighter lights and less current drain.

Im using Amsoil and the Bosch filter. If I hadent experienced the difference in the noise with the cam chains between the Amsoil-Bosch filter Id say it was just a gimmick,Im sold on this setup. Now my trans will hang up if I bang 3rd gear if Im not paying attention so I went with Amsoil tranny fluid thinking it my help this,it didnt so at some point I will go back to Castroil in the tranny.

12- where can you purchase the combination nut (washer) that attaches to the ECM hold down studs? I think the nut is a 10mm that fits on the 5mm stud coming out of the ECM. Tried all of the big and small stores with no luck. Any one have a part # or suggestion. Right now using a 5/16 5mm nut and lock washer (which does the job).

13- the Z did not come with a key FOB, so if I purchase one, can I program it myself, or is that a dealer job?

14- I have noticed with the door open and the hood up, when I go by the door, the power door lock actuator seems to click, almost like it wants to lock and then unlock. Any insight on that?

As usual, thanks for any info...................Tom

12. the nut is an M5X.8 flanged nut and most any dealer (any - not only GM) should have them. I believe they would be M8 hex. The original GM # 11514252 but NLA. You of course would prefer the original finish. There are dealers with them on the shelf but you shouldn't have difficulty finding satisfactory local. In this link are several different OE numbers:

http://www.maniacelectricmotors.com/95001451.html?AdID=16070cm00cm095001451&gclid=CI_aiteOlr4CFYw7Ogodp2IAng

MOPAR I believe uses a good bit of M5 hardware.
