I've seen this come up as a bad starter motor or defective wiring connection between the starter and battery. SYS could be flashing due to a heavy drain on the battery when trying to start. Check battery voltage with a digital voltmeter when trying to start hot. Voltage should stay above 10.5 or so according to some manuals. IMHO. Any others got some insight?

Time to measure some voltages (unless you just want to start replacing things)
When it won't start measure these with the key turned:
1. From the engine block to the Pos on the battery
2. From the Neg to the Pos on the battery
Don't assume a new battery is a good battery.
From there, assuming above ~11V other places should be measured....

car has 20k on it I believe its the starter that came with the car. will check voltages next time it dont crank but I feel as if the batt is fine. was looking for the location of the starter relay?

It's going to be under your left knee cap. You'll have to remove the cover but that is only a couple of screws on the front part and I think one fastener toward the firewall. On your car (not mine) it should be the relay closest to the steering column.
