I will tackle this code over the weekend. I have a Tech 1 which I have never used. Can someone tell me what cartdrige and how to use this to find the fault code the reset it with the Tech 1.

Here's the TSB and to do a '90MY with a Tech1 you need a '91MY Body Cartridge, the '90MY Cartridge doesn't have SIR capabilities!

Bulletin 90-436-9J - the bulletin I believe in it's entirety should be in the "Members only" section. I've not looked there recently but I would expect it's there.

1991 Body Systems Cartridge (TKO4040A) and 1990 Dual UART/SIR Adapter (TA00065). The 1991 Body Systems Cartridge must be used because the 1990 Body Systems Cartridge has no SIR code-clearing capabilities for the 1990 Corvette.

I am NOT sure if a "mass storage cartridge" will do '90MY SIR with the correct adapter. I've never tried but it is likely! The MSC wasn't available at the time of the TSB or at least I don't recall it being available in '91.

This is how to clear the codes right out of the FSM
Just practice the cadence looking at the second hand of a clock a few times
before trying on the car. Works great.

1. Turn ignition switch "OFF".
2. Ground ALDL terminal "K".
3. Turn ignition switch "ON".
4. Wait for fault codes to begin flashing (~5 sec). When the codes begin
flashing, unground ALDL terminal "K" for 3 sec +/- 0.5 sec.

5. After ungrounding ALDL terminal "K" as described above, ground it
again for 3 sec +/- 0.5 sec.

6. Unground ALDL terminal "K" and wait 10 secs. Before turning ignition
"OFF", verify that Code 12 is the only code being flashed.

The '90MY TSB's won't open on the "Registry Members" TSB List and there's not a direct link to it either so here's the TSB I believe complete:

1990: Service Bulletin: SIR Diagnostics and Procedures to Prevent Codes 16 and 26 Due to Corrosion

Subject: SERVICE MAN. UPDATE SEC.9J A/B REV. SIR DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE
Model and Year: 1990 CORVETTE
Source: Chevrolet Service Bulletin
Bulletin Number: 90-436-9J - (11/07/1991)

Some 1990 Corvettes have set SIR Sensor Codes 16 and 26. The DERM has detected an unacceptably high resistance between the SIR sensor and the frame rail, most likely due to a buildup of corrosion on the mounting surfaces. New service procedures have been developed to remove the corrosion and help prevent it from building up again. Removal and installation procedures, revised to address the corrosion issue, are attached. Please use these new procedures for all 1990 Corvette SIR Code 16 and Code 26 situations.

IMPORTANT! - The corrosion condition and repair procedures apply only to 1990 Corvette; 1991 and subsequent vehicles do not set sensor codes due to this condition.

The new procedures require the use of a special grease (P/N 12345579) and two external-tooth lock washers (P/N 11501869 - 8 mm, P/N 121753 - 6 mm) for the sensor mounting bolts.

Along with the new procedures, please remember the following:

1. The "SIR Diagnostic System Check" in Section 9J-A must be the starting point of any SIR diagnostics. The "SIR Diagnostic System Check" will verify proper "INFL REST" warning lamp operation and will lead you to the correct chart to diagnose any SIR faults. Bypassing these procedures may result in extended diagnostic time, incorrect diagnosis, and incorrect parts replacement.

2. If both Code 15 and 16 (or 25 and 26) are set, use the Code 16(26) diagnosis chart first. Then, if Code 15(25) resets after the Code 16(26) is corrected, perform the Code 15(25) diagnosis.

3. To clear 1990 Corvette SIR codes, use the Tech 1 (part number T1 or 94-00101-A) with the 1991 Body Systems Cartridge (TKO4040A) and 1990 Dual UART/SIR Adapter (TA00065). The 1991 Body Systems Cartridge must be used because the 1990 Body Systems Cartridge has no SIR code-clearing capabilities for the 1990 Corvette.

If the Tech 1, cartridge, and adapter are not available, codes can be cleared by grounding Terminal "K" of the ALDL connector as called out below under "ALDL Code-Clearing Technique". If using the ALDL procedure, be sure to follow it completely and exactly; codes can be difficult to clear using this method if the procedure is not carefully followed.

4. If the ignition is turned "ON" while any part of the 199O Corvette SIR system is disconnected, a code will set and remain set, even if the component is reconnected, until cleared by the technician.

ALDL CODE-CLEARING TECHNIQUE

When using this code-clearing technique, a digital wristwatch can be quite helpful. The timing sequence discussed below is very important to successfully clearing codes. The watch can help you with timing the 3-second intervals more exactly.

1.Turn ignition "OFF".

2. Ground ALDL terminal "K".

3. Turn ignition "ON". Do not start the car however.

4. Wait for codes to begin flashing (approximately 5 seconds). When codes begin flashing, unground ALDL terminal "K" for 3 seconds +/- 1/2 second.

5. After ungrounding terminal "K" as described in Step 4, ground it again for 3 seconds +/- 1/2 second.

6. Unground ALDL terminal "K", and wait 10 seconds. Before turning ignition "OFF", ground terminal "K" again and verify that Code 12 flashes six (6) times.

If Code 12 does not flash six (6) times, codes have not been cleared properly. Begin clearing procedure again starting with Step 1.

CODE 16 FRONT SENSOR #1 (LH) (SENSOR FAULT) Circuit Description: In a frontal crash of sufficient force, the Front Discriminating Sensor Switch closes, providing a path to ground for the deployment loop current. The sensor contains additional circuitry, used by the DERM for diagnostics. If the DERM measures more than a certain resistance value between the redundant ground circuit and the DERM's own ground, Code 16 will set. This code will also set if the DERM measures less than a certain resistance between the sensor feed circuit and B + or the diagnostic return circuit and B +.

Severe corrosion under the sensor mounting bracket may cause a Code 16. Refer to "Left Sensor" on attached pages to remove sensor, inspect for corrosion, and correct corrosion if found. "Left Sensor" also instructs on use of special grease and washers to help prevent recurrence of Code 16 due to corrosion.

The Fasten Seat Belt indicator will stay "ON" continuously when an SIR code has been set.

If power is applied to the SIR system while any component is not properly connected, an additional code will be set for the disconnected SIR component.

CODE 26 FRONT SENSOR #2 (RH) (SENSOR FAULT) Circuit Description: In a frontal crash of sufficient force, the Front Discriminating Sensor switch closes, providing a path to ground for the deployment loop current. The sensor contains additional circuitry, used by the DERM for diagnostics. If the DERM measures more than a certain resistance value between the redundant ground circuit and the DERM's own ground, Code 26 will set. FORWARD DISCRIMINATING SENSORS Caution should be used to assure proper location of sensors to the front frame rails. The keying of the sensors to the frame rails through the differently sized mounting bolt holes in the sensor mounting plate should never be modified in the field.

CAUTION: Be very careful when handling a sensor. Never strike or jar a sensor. If you do, it could cause deployment and result in personal injury or improper operation of the Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system. All sensor mounting bolts must be carefully torqued to assure proper sensor operation. Never power up the SIR system when any sensor is not rigidly attached to the vehicle, since the sensor is easily activated when not attached and could result in a deployment.

LEFT SENSOR

CAUTION: The following procedures must be followed in the order listed to temporarily disable the Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system and prevent false diagnostic codes from setting. Failure to follow this procedure could result in possible air bag deployment, personal injury, or unneeded SIR system repairs.

Remove or Disconnect

1. Turn ignition switch "OFF."

2. Left sound insulator; refer to INSTRUMENT PANEL, GAGES, & CONSOLE (SECTION 8C).

3. Connector Position Assurance (CPA) and yellow two-way SIR connector at base of steering column.

4. Battery; refer to BATTERY (SECTION 6D1).

5. ECM and support; refer to DRIVEABILITY AND EMISSIONS 9SECTION 6E3).

6. Sensor mounting bolts.

7. Sensor electrical connection from retainer; disconnect connection.

8. Sensor from vehicle.

IMPORTANT

Clean Sensor mounting bracket surface, frame rail mounting surface, and mounting bolts and holes to remove any paint or corrosion that might interfere with a good electrical ground.

CAUTION Proper operation of the sensors and Supplemental inflatable Restraint (SIR) system requires that repairs to the vehicle structure return it to its original production configuration. Deployment requires, at a minimum, replacement of the DERM, both forward discriminating sensors, the SIR Coil Assembly, and the Inflator Module. Any visible damage to the sensors, DERM, and/or the DERM mounting brackets requires replacement, and the steering wheel must be dimensionally inspected, whether deployment occurred or not.

Install or Connect

1. Apply a thin layer of special grease P/N 12345579 to the frame rail mounting surface and the mounting flange of the sensor. Do not apply the grease to the mounting bolts or holes.

2. Forward discriminating sensor, with arrow pointing toward front of vehicle.

3. External tooth lock washers, P/N 11501869 (8 mm) and 121753 (6 mm) to mounting bolts.

4. Sensor mounting bolts. Ensure that washers are between bolt head and senor mounting flange, not between mounting flange and frame rail. Tighten Front (13 mm head) bolt to 25 N.m (19 lb. ft.) - Rear (10 mm head) bolt to 14 N.m (125 lb. in.)

5. Sensor electrical connection, then clip completed connection into retainer.

6. ECM and support; refer to DRIVEABILITY AND EMISSIONS (SECTION 6E3).

7. Battery; refer to BATTERY (SECTION 6D1).

8. Yellow two-way SIR connector at base of steering column and Connector Position Assurance (CPA).

9. Left sound insulator; refer to INSTRUMENT PANEL, GAGES & CONSOLE (SECTION 8C).

10. Perform "SIR Diagnostic System Check" as outlines in SIR SYSTEM DIAGNOSIS (SECTION 9JA).

RIGHT SENSOR

CAUTION The following procedures must be followed in the order listed to temporarily disable the Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system and prevent false diagnostic codes from setting. Failure to follow this procedure could result in possible air bag deployment, personal injury, or unneeded SIR system repairs.

Remove or Disconnect

1. Turn ignition switch "OFF."

2. Left sound insulator; refer to INSTRUMENT PANEL, GAGES & CONSOLE (SECTION 8C).

4. Six front right-side rocker panel retaining screws.

5. Right-side front fender "grill panel" retaining bolts, remove fender.

6. Peel back rear portion of wheelhouse-to-hood seal.

7. Right-side lower wheelhouse retaining bolts; remove lower wheelhouse.

8. Two front windshield washer reservoir retaining bolts.

9. Loosen remaining washer reservoir bolt; rotate reservoir to access sensor.

10. Sensor mounting bolts.

11. Sensor electrical connection from retainer; disconnect connection.

12. Sensor from vehicle.

IMPORTANT

8. Reposition wheelhouse -to-hood seal.

9. Right-side front fender ("grill panel"); install retaining bolts.

10. Six front right-side rocker panel retaining screws.

11. Yellow two-way SIR connector at base of steering column and Connector Position Assurance (CPA).

12. Left sound insulator; refer to INSTRUMENT PANEL, GAGES & CONSOLE (SECTION 8C).

13. Perform "SIR Diagnostic System Check" as outlined in SIR SYSTEM DIAGNOSIS (SECTION 9JA).

If all of that fails and you'd just like to put out the SIR lamp and the "SeatBelt" warning in the cluster you can substitute a 2 Ohm 2% resistor at the connector either at the top of the column(un-plug bag) or at the column base which is much more difficult to get to. That should put out both lights I believe.

Early air-bags punch pretty hard!!!

Sorry for being a novice to electronics.

I hooked the Tech 1 and it actually works, not bad for $375 last year. I got through the Vin selection and it asked what test to run.

I was using a GM Powertrain cartridge P/N 02002404 and got totally lost.
In the Service Bulletin it states use Tech 1 P/N 94-00101-A or 1991 body system cartridge TK04040A to reset.

If I buy a mass storage cartridge will I have everything I need.

Have do you navigate to get to the SIR testing?

When using the K ground method the INL RESET light flashed not the ENGINE Light is this correct?

If you find a mass storage cartridge please pass along where you found it as my Tech I came without it and I cannot even get the bloody thing to turn on without it?

:o not to be a wise guy, but besides getting to the right sensor which is under the washer bottle the hardest part for me was clearing the damn code.....I don't have a Tech1 or a 1A but a MT2500 and no body cartridge. Anyway, I went to the hardware store and bought a door bell push button assemblt, wired it up with phone wire and plugged it into the ALDL and grounded the other lead on the hinge pillar. I used my phone's stop watch to get the timing down and cleared it on the second attempt. The key is the timing if you don't have the proper software. If you miss on the timing, the code will not clear. The only thing to remember is that to ground the system you have to press the door bell. Other than that quirk, it is easy and cheap. I tried doing the One One-thousand thing but never got it cleared....I was ready to just pull the bulbs until the door bell and a stop watch idea hit me ....yea I know, a BFO moment! LOL

Wayne, IIRC the Tech 1 should power on without a cartridge and display "cartridge missing" or "insert cartridge" or something similar.

Guess I need to tear into this thing a bit further. The power supplier (cigarette lighter input) has a green power light on it but the hand held unit is dead as a doornail. Thanks for the input. I am still gonna try to use/repair this unit and find the mass storage until.

On the ALDL connector of the cable there should be a part number. What is that part number. The Tech 1's that I've had all had/have a cable with the 12V molded in and there's no "pilot" light. If your 12V cable is detachable and original it would have a part number on it also to ID it.

Its almost 8 in the evening here and I am at home. When I get to the shop in the morning will check on the numbers, contents again and post up what I find.

I am anxiously awaiting a USB to OBD I cable to arrive. Recently purchased a program from a company (think it is called TOAD) that is supposed to be the do all bells & whistles model for the electronics. Now if I can just get them to make up a TOAD for dummy's then I will be set. :) Yeah I know I am as thick as a stump when it comes to chasing sparks.

My Tech I came with only one cable. It is labeled: TECHLINE TA00011B It has a 12 pin male connection on the upper end where the cable comes out it is labeled power out on the lower left corner with a female receptacle. The lower right corner has Power In and a built in cable that goes to a cigarette lighter male input with a green light to show it is getting power? The cigarette receptacle unit has a mini fuse in it that is rated at 7.5 amps also on the cigarette plug unit where the wire comes into the plug it has two holes the left one is labeled with a + the right one is marked with a - and I am assuming this is to check voltage with a meter? The other end plugs into the top of the Tech I with a 15 connector. The bottom end has the 12 pin OBD I connector.

There is one module that has the OBD I receptacle (12 pin male) on one end and the other end has a OBD I 12 pin female on it. This module also has a 12 inch "pig tail" type wire that comes out of the module at a 45 degree angle to a male plug that can be plugged into the TA00011B cable in the lower left corner that is labeled "Power out". This module has a part number of: TA02659A and just above the part number it is further labeled: RWAL/4WAL ADAPTER the top also has the GM logo and TECHLINE on it.

I can send photos if I have been to vague or verbose on the cables, modules or any of the modules that came with the unit.

Thank you and once again when it comes to chasing sparks I am not the sharpest knife in the drawer.

Mass Storage cartridges pop up from time to time. There are two on eBay right now, although both are a little pricey (125 and 175)

Sorry to dig up and old thread, but I'm having difficulty resetting a code 16. Yesterday I cleaned the sensor mounting tabs & bottom sides of the screws with 1000 grit sand paper, ran the screws through a die, and cleaned the frame rail threads with brake clean. Everything was spotless.....although nothing looked bad to begin with. The ground spot forward of the impact sensor was worse (which I also cleaned). I did not use any dielectric grease nor did sand the pant off the frame rails for better contact.

I've done the terminal K to A ground process for 30 minutes without luck. Twice code 12 flashed at the end, but only 2 times before going back to code 16. Both of those times the Service Ride Control warning also turned on. Is it possible the impact sensor is bad or is my timing off? When you first unground after the 5-7 second wait for the light to start flashing, is that immediately after the first flash or anytime after the sequence starts? Should anything happen during the process? I just keep seeing code 16 flash over and over.

Here's what I'm using to ground the terminals. Easy on/off.
