View Full Version : Any Haibeck 500 cars sold last few years and at what prices?

I am trying to think of ways to justify things I want. I have begun initial planning for some winter work for Marc Haibeck to do on my 20k mile '95. It could be a few small things that need to get done, maybe $500, up to a full boat Haibeck 500 package into 5 figures, or something in between (which was the original plan and remains the most rationale). I know what I want of course, but I am looking for a rationale or justification that goes beyond just sporting a woody.
Thinking of return on investment made me wonder what values have been seen on H500 cars that have sold, if any. I did not notice any for sale while I was looking for my 95, so I don't know if any have been sold lately. I know that a pristine 20k mile '94 sold around $32k with a lot of Marc's work including top end porting, headers, Corsa etc., making about 480 hp. I think it was a great value for the buyer and probably market correct. I also know that it is very difficult to recover performance upgrade investments from buyers, depending of course on initial purchase investment.
So if anyone knows of H500 cars that have sold and what they went for, that would be very helpful to me. If you don't want it public please feel free to PM me. --Bob

you'll never make back what you spend on mods. they lower the value, not raise it

That is my belief also. There is a good argument for leaving a car perfectly stock and go for a Bloomington Gold, and my 95 would have been a great candidate for that. But after modifying my 93 over 13 years and enjoying it, I just didn't want to do the Bloomington thing. I like the mods and some buyers out there do also, but you are right, rarely will you see a real return oninvetment, other than in the grins department. --Bob

I've recently decided to keep my 90 stock and look for a modded one to buy when the time comes. or just buy a porsche, haven't decided yet

I dont think the smart investor is putting a ZR-1 into their investment portfolio. At the very best one might hope for a slower rate of depreciation on their Z compared to other vehicles. Does it really matter what you can sell the car for at some future date if you have many miles of smiles & memories? I took a 95 3k mile car and did a Haibeck 500 pkg as well as many other mods and couldn't be happier (maybe a 415 would make me happier :dancing) Last time I checked our cars have 4 round wheels, drive the thing and have fun. I for one would buy a car that was properly modded. There isn't any guess work with these cars now, everybody knows what works and what doesn't. Good Luck on whatever you decide to do :handshak:

If you are going to spend the cash go for the 385 or 402 with a 175 dry NOS the combination will get well you over 700HP. The only drawback is the repair bills and breaking down 500 miles from home.

Hard to argue with your logic. I am mostly trying to craft a rationale in case the wife finds out :-). I also could do a middle ground approach (top end, headers, etc) and get a lot of fun out of it. And the worst case is I am stuck with a 20 k mile car in great conditon with 4:10 gears, Corsa and a Hurst. Life could be worse! -- Bob

Robert, that would be fun. As an old race driver once said, "Too much horsepower is almost enough". But I think I wll take a bit more conservative approach. -- Bob

Lgaff has said it and I will second it. Get a high miler, then mod it to your heart's content and drive the p*ss out of it. Be hard to wipe the grin of your face. Its great to feel like you don't need to watch the odo all the time and ration your driving.
Bob,

There's probably quite a few more configurations of LT5s these days than even a few years ago when you had the QB.

You and Lee offer a great approach which I did consider. I decided to go for a low miileage 95 that I really liked so I guess I will pay a penaly for that. But it is a car and year I wanted. So I just have to work harder on my rationalization of the costs of mods. Or as I said earlier, in the worst case I go slower on the mods and in the meantime have only 425 horsepower to play with.:) -- Bob

sold a 91 REd/REd with about 30k miles back in 2007. Had the haibeck 500+ package and 4.10's. Think I got 28k for it.

I have a Corey Henderson worked ZR-1. The nice thing is stock engine reliability isn't reduced at 500hp and the engine just performs the way that Lotus intended. After you drive a 500hp ZR-1, a stock one seems slow.

Quite true. It's difficult for me to recall what the stock motor felt like.

You guys are killing me. I will continue to work on my rationalization. But I suspect that if I go forward, my decision will not only cost me the cost of the mods but a trip to Italy as punitive damages.-- Bob

Bob,

How can you rationalize a "PERMAGRIN"? I remember when you sold your 1993 and knew it was a tough decision.

Will you make money by upgrading, absolutely not. Will you lose money? Definetly NOT! I know all the money I have put in my car I will never get back, but hearing the motor REV up to 7k and the big sh1t eating grin I have... It's worth it!!!!

No matter what you decide, enjoy it :salute:

Hope to see you @ BG in 2013

In my heart I know you are right Pete. Return on investment is going to seat of the pants, not fatter wallet in the pants. But it does surprise me that your 500 cars or Marc's or Lingenfelters aren't recognized as more valuable. Oh, Well. Pizza here we come! --Bob

Regardless of who's 500hp package you purchase, you'll be extremely happy. Especially if it has 4:10's.

I'm not particularly crazy about Turquoise but I can't imagine trading my car for too many other "Z's" out there. It's just too much fun to drive with the mods that Paul Denhert and Rick Mueller did to it.

Mod the hell out of one and drive the piss out of it.

I'm with you, I wouldn't care what the color was. You got a lot of car for the $. With your talents you can paint the thing any color you want. As to the original OP, pull the trigger and join the 500hp or more club, you'll be glad you did.
