Front shocks, trans and rear axle oil change, also hope to change brake and clutch fluid. Has anybody done this and what brake bleeding tool is best to use?
This year I didn't have the extra cash to buy the tires but should be able to get them next year too.

1- have to change the passenger side front shock, so I might as well do them both.
2-still have the original fuel injectors, will have to change them sooner or later
3- definitly have some electrical issues I'll have to pin down.

You can have your front shocks rebuilt by Bilstien $55 ea I think
Trans - Castrol 10W60 -You can only get it from BMW dealer, change at 10k to 12k intervals. Make sure to take the fill plug out first. ZFDoc has the best prices on the fill and drain plugs. Doesn't hurt to have a couple laying around just in case. www.zfdoc.com (http://www.zfdoc.com)
Rear axle - I used Mobil 1 synthetic with a bottle (4 oz) of posi lube

If you have the time, send them to Bilstein, $55, Lifetime warranty I think
2-still have the original fuel injectors, will have to change them sooner or later Call Jon at Fuel Injector Connection, I've had his rebuilt injectors in over three years now, no problems at all.
3- definitly have some electrical issues I'll have to pin down. :(

I will finish installing new bushings in the front. I put new ones on both sides but only on the bottom a few years ago so I could gauge the amount of "squeak" there would be and resolve it before doing the tops. Time for the tops now then it's new shoes (tires) for the front.
After that baby will have new shoes (tires) all the way around.
I may take a clay bar to the back part of the car. It gets the bulk of the washing and dirt so it's starting to show squirrel marks.

what is this 'winter' you speak of ;).
Maybe headers after my next emissions inspection in January (otherwise it would be done already). I also need to get off my azz and get an autoprom or equivalent- but other than that the goal is to just keep it in running condition.

More of the shop than the cars but what I would like to get done is to install the 4 post, paint the floor, do the cabinets and shelves (or start on them) and do the flooring in the office area. For the Z a new exhaust system, install new poly bushings and coilovers. On the 89 a new exhaust, valve springs, and ZR51 short throw. Hopefully I will get some of it done but I am still curious as to what this "winter" thing is you guys are talking about? :p

I gotta get a 4 post for the house garage and a 2 post lift for the shop. You're inspiring me.
I probably won't get the 345's until Winter hits. I've seen them as low priced as 2 for $199. Might buy two pairs at that price.
I think my Khumo's might be defective anyway. Most of the time I drive it, all they do is spin for the first three gears???? Crazy.......

For '92 #043, I just ordered the Marc Haibek DVD and I hope to give it a tune up this winter -- plugs, plug wires, coil, injectors. I also need to replace the rear brake pads.
Got a set of A molds which will probably end up on '91 #987.

Humm I wonder how may lifts we would need to constitute a group buy? The Hunter Engineering (http://www.hunter.com/)sales rep for Louisiana lives at the end of my street. I could see what we could do for a delivered and installed price?
When you see the tires for that cheap PLEASE let me know (call, email, text, hit me in the head with a rock something  )
I took the 89 out the other night and it was still in the upper 90's with the Sun going down and by gosh I hit black ice EVERYWHERE!! I just can't see why for one we are still having icing issues here and secondly why these dang tires are always defective!!!!

I am so torn. My car is absolutely stock other than wheels, tires and a mild Haibeck chip. Part of me wants to step up the engine, headers, gear etc., the other part of me wants to keep it stock and low miles....

BTW. this is my first post after lurking for over three years...what a great site.

Thanks for posting and welcome!!!! You can still keep it "stock", but do some performance enhancing as well.
I might go to the extreme, but... My Z still looks kinda stock. ;)
Meet up with some ZR-1 owners, talk to them about upgrades they have done and ask to drive their cars.

GEEZ don't say the "W" word yet please....here is my scheduled plan.
ZR1
1.) Send the radio to Doc Don's to get the CD player fixed
2.) Install the power antenna over-ride switch
3.) Diag. the intermittent "service ride control" and replace whatever as a result
4.) Hopefully track down someone to fix the side bolster on the seat - the old driver had apparently worn his calf roping leather belt while getting in and out (pic below).
5.) Replace weather-stripping, pending the availability of a quality product
6.) Fix the slow-up passenger window (pretty sure it is from the crap weather-stripping I had installed last winter)
Z06
1.) Send out the heads for P&P
2.) New Kooks headers and X-pipe
3.) Coil relocation kit
And then wait 5 months until I can pull them out of the garage....

Hi John, thanks for all the info. Just one question, the rear axle fluid is there a specific weight or is it only one type? I'm gonna ask Santa for new front shocks to match the ones he gave me this year, then I'll have a complete set to send to Bilstien when I'm ready to to do them again.
I saw the Phoenix bleeder on the Gearz show and it looked pretty easy, I'll have to write another letter to Santa and be real good the rest of the year.;)
thanks again...jim

If I remember right it's 75/90, but you might look in your owners manual to be sure. Some of the gear oils available have the posi additive in it already. Red line sells a 4 oz bottle that I added for extra insurance.
The Pheonix is really easy to use. You need a new quart of brake fluid for the job and you'll use just about all of it to do the brakes and might even be able to do the clutch too. You push the old fluid from the wheel cylinders to the master cylinders and the slave to the master for the clutch. Get a turkey baster to suck the dirty fluid out of the master cylinders.
You are certainly welcome.

Hi Ryan--
Welcome to the forum. I just got back into the ZR-1 world after a five year absence with a bone stock 20k mile 95. Based on my owning and modifying a 93 for 13 years I immediately had Marc Haibeck do a few things like 4:10 gears, a Hurst short shifter, a Corsa exhaust, and Marc's chip. Car seems stock otherwise but feels much quicker and certainly sounds better. If you are happy with the stock sound you could alternatively add exhaust cutouts to the stock system for a few grins once in a while. See Marc Haibeck's website.
This winter I will do a modification to the Corsa like I did on my old one to smooth the sounds at one rpm point, may add headers and will probably get the engine refinished. The only knock on the car I got was the engine has considerable spotting that I don't like, but not everyone wants to do that. Enjoy the car! -- Bob

Ryan,
Welcome to the site!!! I know exactly what you mean while I am not in that position with the ZR-1 I am with the GS. The car is stock down to the paper air filter and has just over 7K miles. I really love the car and just can’t modify it not to mention drive it. It has been with us for over 10 years and I have maybe put 800 miles on it. I use to enjoy the car show thing and was very active in the NCRS but then got into road racing and never looked back. While I have enjoyed what I did with the GS I have enjoyed the 89 a hundred fold compared to the GS. The 89 is a rock pecked up 100K plus mile L98 and I could never replace the memories and friends that I have made while enjoying that car (or the High Speed Awards :eusa_shhh). The same can be said for the ZR-1 I really enjoy driving that car and the people involved with it, or any C4 for that matter. If I could find the right buyer for the GS it would go to a new home and be replaced with a GS I could enjoy in a heartbeat. Just my .02 Make the car what you want it to be and enjoy it with your family, friends, and the brotherhood.
