View Full Version : Removing secondary throttle valves...Help please.

Okay. Bought Marcs chip for secondary throttle valve delete for my 91 because I really would like to make the car as trouble free as possible, and I didn't want to keep spending money on actuators, finding out if they are installed correctly etc.... so, the decision was made to just make the system as simple as possible as Paul Workman and others have recommended.

I have the plenum and IH on the driver's side off at this time (the pass side IH is not coming loose for some reason..help here, should I pry it somehow?) and can see the throttle plates with the two screws holding each one on. I really don't like the idea of wiring the plates open, but it looks like the heads have to come off in order to do it right...is this correct?

If they heads have to come off, I will resort to plan two, that is, would it be okay to just unscrew the throttle plates and leave the shafts? I really don't like that idea either, but something about using wire to keep them open just reminds me of a hack job. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Okay, found this... I know, search...I was under the impression that there was only one shaft that went from the front of the engine to the back, but I see that that is not the case and the shafts are separate and each go in from the valley side, ie laterally.

There is a product , jb weld might be the maker, that is like putty.. I believe it's two part, but it may not be. I have used it to seal leaky freeze plugs and it hardens like a rock in about 5 to 10 minutes. Can one just fill the holes with this putty? I see the plug that is recommended but is that overkill, or would I just be turning a good job into a hack.

JB Weld is a 2-part epoxy. Use it on the Dorman 555-108 freeze plugs as a sealant. The plugs are cheap enough and easy to install. Why take a chance on the epoxy ever coming off? (not to mention it would look like hell and might need to be ground out of the runner later...(JMO).)

Agreed, the Dorman plugs are dirt-cheap, and effective. I didn't use any sealant on mine, as they are a very tight press-fit.

While it's apart......this is a no brainer. Providing one can free up a few bucks.

Thanks all for the replies. I have a Napa close by, I hope they carry these plugs.

I seem to be tackling more than just the injectors and secondary throttle bypass here even though those two things were my origninal intent...I am now considering the following....

1 replace coils, just because I didn't do any tests for them or the injectors...just assumed the injectors was the problem.

2 coolant bypass. to make future pull downs easier.

3 and possibly porting at least the IH so I don't have to pull them off again. The plenum is pretty easy to get off and will be even easier after the mods, so I'm thinking just the IH for now...if that.

I do have a small air compressor (nail gun type but no air tools) and dremel, and harbor freight is close by. I've ground out a throttle body before, but never something this big...am I thinking with too much ambition here? I wish there was a "kit" I could buy that would have all the necessary accoutrements, including foos ball :)....any ideas?

Thanks again!!

I just got shot down on the porting idea, at least farming it out. Christmas is around the corner and property taxes/insurance are pending...

Yeah, I can fix ya up with the burrs, sanding drums and flap wheels enough for a DIY project. Cost is about $100, plus the cost of a die grinder.

I don't think your nail gun compressor is going to do the trick...or maybe it could, but it is going to be a bit tedious - waiting for the compressor to catch up. You might be better off with an electric die grinder and a speed control from Harbor Freight.

PM me for more info if you (or anyone else) is interested!

One more item... Porting is going to change the calibration you just bought from Marc, I expect. You might want to discuss it with him before you install the chip.

Just a thought.

Yeah Paul I did think of that and was going to send it off again.. But the more I think about it,I think I am just going to do the above mods and then at a later time do the porting.

I'll keep you in mind if I decide to do it myself at a later time and Pete sent me a PM also for a great price on the porting...I just can't/shouldn't swing it right now with all my pending obligations.

Thanks to all who have replied.

It took me about 4 days (2.5 of them full days) to port my IH and plenum runners + maybe 4-5 hours to port match 8 of the primary head ports. reassembling the stuff probably just took 6 hours including fitting all the injectors and small details.

my hands were quite sore from working the die grinder...I don't know why, but I have a death grip like when I drive at the track..you could relax, but I don't and it takes a little bit out of you. Like paul said, probably upwards of a $100 in supplies if you don't have a lot of grinding stuff (you need the longer bits).

I've heard the rumors (mmmbah-ah-ah-ah) regarding sheep and Pete, but never actually seen any at his place or inside his (mmmbah-ah-ah-ah) "skunkworks" (aka garage). However, I CAN attest to seeing some sheepish expressions on faces :o when they discover it was a stock bottom 350 with cams and headers that just waxed their big inch LS2,3, & 7s!! :jawdrop:(mmmbah-ah-ah-ah) Maybe the sheep are those that believe their pushrod throw-backs are "modern technology"...Sheeeiiiiitttt!!! :p

Interesting stuff up there :) More than just LT5 Experts!

Here's an update for anyone who cares. As I pulled the injector rails, I noticed that the secondary inj's have been replaced at some point with accels (at least they look exactly like the accels that I just bought). I took an ohm meter to each of them and was surprised at the results..

All of the 8 accels were identical resistance (to the tenths) at 14.6 ohms.

The primary's look like they are original and the values ranged from 5.6 to 12.4.

you may recall that my symptoms were the horrible missing upon acceleration and some missing at idle with the classic "rod knock" noise, which you've pointed out is hopefully the flywheel.

Wouldn't the poor numbers on the primary injectors explain why the car runs horrible until it gets to about 4000 rpms (guessing at this number because my tach is broken) and then seems to smooth out and take off, though it's obviously not pulling like I know it should..comparing to my old lt4 with the hotcam. I'm tempted to reuse the accels and just replace the primary 8. But I think I will just go ahead and replace them since I already bough em.

I tested the injectors cold obviously. The other surprise I got was that I found the starter to be new looking. The valley was gunked up pretty good but not as bad as I would have thought, judging from seeing pictures. I don't have the typical leak around the breather.

I think I am going to at least do some clean up of the IH and plenum ports. Depending on how much information I find. I'm really not concerned about having to take the plenum off again if need be since it should be a piece of cake not having to drain anything and having removed the secondary throtle blades. So again, may take a chance at the secondary injectors being good since they ohm out okay.

You should definately change the primary injectors.
Accel 150821

These will work for primary you take off the lower o-ring and they seal around the body of the injector.
