hi guys
ive had that problem since i bought the car...i know youre going to say-why didnt you fix it before?....now is the time...
every time i unlock the car,the interior lights go on(normal)...the problem is they will stay on for 15-20 minutes before turning off...you look like an idiot, going down the highway at one in the morning, with all your lights on,
including the light for the spare compartment...how do i fixx that?
my guess is ill have to change some module, but which one?
thanks

Hi Blackjack, I tried to look it up in my Helm as I have a 90 also. I must be stupid as I can only come up with one of two sources for the malfunction: the relay for the courtsey lights or the CCM.

I'm gonna try to re-read the section later and see if I can make some sense out of it. The electrical book, 8A, has "courtsey lights don't work" but nothing for staying on too long!

Sorry I wish I knew more about electronic cars!:icon_scra I know that there is such a thing as a time delay relay but I don't know if that is what is used in our cars.

Hopefully some one with the know how will see this and offer some help.

Tom

SORRY I do not know the fix!!! I wanted to tell you this story about my pops (passed 4 years ago) his name was Jack. His nickname was BlackJack from his days at Ingersoll-Rand Co.(all the guys had nicknames there..pop's was an excellent poker player) Later in life he owned an Industrial Pump Dist. Biz(I-R was his main pump line) and when he hosted his Big Golf outing each year it was called the BlackJack Invitational for all the good clients and co. salesmen. The trophy for the low gross(which got the winner an invite the next year to defend) was a big Black Jack(like the toy jack game) on a wood base. Everyone always commented about that trophy and how big the jack was(abt 6"x 6") and such a unique trophy. It is one of my prized heirlooms I remember my father by! Just thought you would like the story!!! cya, Bryan

Blackjack, start with the door switch's they are a common issue with our cars.

Open your doors and push on both door switch's have a friend help, if your interior lights go off then it's one of your switches, you can either buy a new one or put a strip of valcro on the door to push the switch further in.

pete,
i dont think the problem is with the door switch...they work all right in every day situation...there has to be some kind of delay switch that keeps the lights on for a while when you unlock the doors with the key,and i think that the switch is confused...im trying to find the name/location of that
(&*?%?%$ module ! i already changed the door switches...how cheap!

If you changed the switch's and you are 100 % sure the new switch's are compressed all the way when the doors are closed, then most likely it's your BCM/CCM.Borrow one to try before you buy.

When you say the switch's work fine everyday situation what do you mean by that,is the problem intermitting.
Our cars do have a door switch issue where they just don't compress the switch's enough to shut the lights off.
Also if the CCM realizes theres a voltage draw for about 15-20 minutes it will shut the lights off.
This is the reason i'm leaning towards the switch's or the interior light switch is in the on position.

Hope this helps.
I can't help much without trouble shooting the car.

pete,
thanks for your time (and patience)
what i meant is the door switch works fine...it only happens when i unlock the doors...if the doors are not locked, they work perfect...i understand there is a delay so you can get into the car, insert your key,etc...i dont think it can be adjusted...dont your interior lights come on,when you unlock your car,
even before you open the door?

According to the service manual, you only have 3 possibilities. The CCM, the courtesy lamp relay or a short in the wire from the CCM to the relay. The first thing to do is remove the courtesy lamp relay to make sure the lights go out or do not come on with the relay removed. If those results are as expected, measure the voltage at terminal 2 of the courtesy relay (grey/blk wire), the reading should not be at ground (0 volts) level when the lights should be off. It should be at 0 volts only when the lights should be on. My assumption is that this voltage will be close to 0 volts for the duration of time the interior lights are on. If that is the case your problem is with the wire from the CCM to the courtesy relay (unlikely) or the CCM needs replacing. The problem COULD still be something with the door ajar switches or the wiring to the CCM from them because the interior lights will "time out" after about 15 minutes and shut themselves off even if you leave the door open to prevent the battery from going dead. The door ajar inputs to the CCM are wires D16 (RH door) blk/wht wire and C12 (LH door) blk/yel wire on connector C1 of CCM, this is the grey connector. If you remove these wires and the problem does not go away, I would be fairly certain it is the CCM. The courtesy lamp relay is located in the bottom RH side of the istrument panel and the CCM is located behind the middle of the instrument panel. I hope this helps.

P.S. to my last post. I just checked and if the switch in the door lock sticks the interior lights stay on indefinitely (longer than the 15 second they are supposed to). The RH and LH door key switches tie together and go to the CCM at connector C! (grey) wire D15 which is a light green wire. I suggest either using a meter to make sure this wire is not at ground (0 Volts) after the key has been removed from the door or inducing the problem and remove this wire (without unhooking anything else) to determine if the lights will time out after 15 seconds. Good luck.
