Pete,
With ported heads would you recommend Stage 1 intakes and stock exhaust? Or Stage 1 all around? Ideas as to $ for either.

Yes,stock exhaust cams with Stage I intakes will not gain you much.
For low cost i would do Stage II intakes with stock exhaust,if money no object i would do Stage II with a .220 exhaust.
Man i can wright a book on this stuff, so since you asked,
Remember we have a 7k RPM limit with stock/ported intake bigger exhaust cams want to push power to higher RPM.

Pete,
Thanks for sharing your significant knowledge on cam selection. Without appearing to create a controversy, Marc H. does not recommend a cam upgrade for a 5.7L motor when porting heads. Why do you believe a stock displacement motor could gain (how much?) using Stage 2 intakes. Can you provide Lift/Dur on Stage 2's?
Thx

Dom,as you know i have very high respect for Marc H. but recommending and choosing to do so are 2 different things.
I'll explain, not recommended could be a couple of reasons
1: idle quality some don't like the idle/sound of a camming car or for the price not worth the gains
2: some think bigger is better in a small cube motor i think there is a point where you can go overboard.
Stage II cam specs are .237 .440, i would not reccommend installing Stage II exhaust cams on a small cube motor you will loose too much low end power and driveability suffers what i would reccommend for exhaust with these are around 15 degrees less exhaust.
I will be trying Stage III intakes .242 .450 with Stage I exhaust cams .228 .415 i would like to go a bit smaller exhaust like a .224-.226 duration with a bit more lift .430-.450 we'll see what happens.

Very interested to see your results. Waiting to pull the trigger on replacement cams!
Interested in a set of Jeal intake cam paper weights?

I am finishing here a 427 LT5 with stage 3 cams. According my calculations the stage 3 exhaust cams are probably to much. The dyno run will show.
I also install bigger inlet valves and leave the exhaust valves stock size.
For a ported 350cui LT5 I would take the inlet cams a bit bigger but not more than stage 1.
The exhaust cams can be left stock with a professional valve seat and exhaust port job.

Was wondering if scholtmj could run his current Jeal cams if he got his lifters coated.....Calico????

Corey Henderson has Jeal cams in his car so I asked him about the durability concerns and his response was change your oil on time. He's heard about failures but has not had any issues with his own. Curiously, about the same time Marc H. put up a picture of a failed Jeal cam on his "facts and failures" section and noted he has not heard of any cams lasting more than 10k miles.
Time will tell if my lifters are in OK shape. I need to remove the passenger side header and the transmission, then the motor is ready to come out. Plus, now that Pete has good things to say about a Stg III cam in a smaller motor, I'll take the opportunity to upgrade.

I guess a good follow up question would be can you perform the correct heat treating on the cams if the lobs are still good?
I will not agree or disagree about Jeal cams.
If you do use the Jeal cams i suggest once a year take valve/cam covers off and do a visual/inspect parts cam lobes/lifters.
I had a bad experience with them.

Is the issue the hardness of the lifter?
Is the issue the hardness of the lifter?
Yes,and the billet cam is soft.

If the cams were soft how are the wearing through the lifter surface?
If the cams were soft how are the wearing through the lifter surface?
When you wear off some of the smooth surface from the cam lobe then the lobe becomes like a stone wheel grinder and eats away at the lifter.
