Nitrogen gas additive
I just topped off with Shell V-Power 91 octane and noticed a sign on the gas pump that said "Now with Nitrogen". I don't know if this is new, or I am unobservant, but I don't recall seeing this before. What is the benefit? Is it harmful to our engines? I don't think it would be, but...... Have other brands added this?

Re: Nitrogen gas additive
Yeah, in the commercials they talk about how it removes deposits. Nothing about how exactly it does that, or if nitrogen in the fuel increases NOx emissions (I assume it doesn't) or any real detail at all.

Re: Nitrogen gas additive: Observation
I just pulled my IHs and was curious as to whether running secondaries full time would make the secondary valves as clean as the primaries. The secondary valves had some buildup on them when I installed the ported IHs in April. Today the secondaries were considerably cleaner almost as clean as the primaries - which I contribute to the fact the secondaries are on all the time and the fuel appears to be cleaning the intakes very nicely.
BTW, again my injectors are absolutely spotless! I've been using BP 93 octane exclusively before and since my porting adventure. I conclude that the fuel is doing a pretty good job of cleaning up the secondary valves and the primaries are clean as (no build-up) as before. Note: BP started advertising a cleaning additive about the same time Shell announced their "nitrogen" additive. FWIW, P.

Re: Nitrogen gas additive
Yea, I kind of thought I missed something with this nitrogen thing. I always thought that N was inert? I can't see where Shell says exactly how the cleaning takes place as they don't say anything about that in the ads.
Last time I pulled my plenum to do a diagnostic my secondaries were way cleaner than the time I pulled the plenum to change injectors. I try to use only gas from BP or Shell, and Chevron/Texaco if I can find it.

Re: Nitrogen gas additive
To quote Shell>>
Shell V-Power contains the highest concentration of our NEW Nitrogen Enriched Cleaning System, a unique, patented improved formula exclusive to Shell. With five times the amount of cleaning agents required by federal government standards, Shell V-Power provides maximum protection, seeking and destroying engine gunk left behind by lower-quality gasolines even faster than regular Shell gasoline. Years of vehicle testing done by Shell have shown that the minimum required level of detergency does not prevent build-up of harmful deposits in some cars. Shell estimates that close to 50 percent of fuels sold in the U.S. are only at or near the minimum level of detergency required by law. Shell V-Power meets the much more stringent requirements of top automakers - including Audi, BMW, General Motors, Honda, Toyota and Volkswagen - and is designated and certified as a TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline. These manufacturers recognize that a clean engine performs better and recommend high-quality fuels to power their vehicles.

All BS! Read the last two articles in Corvette Enthusiast on Gasoline and Additives, very enlightening. I can scan and post if you like...
