To be Safe.
Its a good thing to do anytime you're working around the wiring of any car.

Yea, what DMark said!
Think of it this way, if something arcs, think of all the 'black boxes' our cars have that cost plenty...and some of'em are NLA....why take the chance, right? I know it sounds like we're FSM geeks. I remember a friend of mine who went to trade school for auto-tech back in the late 60's & that's the first thing he did before doing an major motor dissassembly. "ya do it this way so ya don't do any unintended arc welding" was his answer when I asked why.

On a second note, just price the cost of a new ECM and it'll become apparent. |

As mentioned it's for safety. You can arc a wrench across the battery terminals or from the positive lead on the alternator. Plus unplugging electronics with a small amount of current can cause issues.

Re: Sorry...another newbie question>>
Ya know the price of an ECM is high.....but I don't know if the people with the 90 ECM's can even get any more, the last ECM's I bought was a 92 application I think?. I couldn't even order an extra EPROM for my car recently. The P/N for the EPROM kept coming up "no such part number".
I do believe that I'll be more intent in the future to make sure I disconnect the battery.

Re: Sorry...another newbie question>>
I guess my question was more about a specific requirement to disconnect battery when working on a ZR... but what all you all said is right on and of course I pulled the battery off line when I started the plenum pull project today. Thanks for the responses...
