Talking Cooling System Flush

I see on the Registry it says not to use tablets in the coooling system. Has anyone used the liquid flush like Prestone to clean the system? I would of course use distilled water for the flush and then rinse with just plain distilled water.

Thanks

I'm going to flush mine this weekend and am planning on just using a lot of distilled h2o, then reload with some green and watter wetter.

That's what I will be doing also. You can't get the last three quarts of fluid out of the engine, so I won't be using anything other than distilled water for the flush. Just for your info, the dis. water was .63cents a gal at Winco, if you have one there.

Thanks fo the reply.

I bought the three gallon casks of distilled water....used three as a final flush after using NYC muni water first. The WW only is effective if you keep the coolant to water ratio under 30%. Anything above that and the ww don't do much for lowering temps.

I used 30% mix and didn't notice much on the gauge. Soooo I read the directions on the bottle and saw that ideal is pure distilled w/ 2 bottles of ww = max results. Any addition of anti-freeze only reduces the effectiveness of the ww.

Tom, thanks for the info...I was going to go about 60/40 on the DW/AF mix but i think i'll run it 90/10 instead and just load up on green when the snow starts blowing again.

Greetings. On the antifreeze thing: read somewhere to be sure it is "silicated" to meet GM 1825-M spec to be easy on the head gaskets. Apparently some of the green stuff is not silicated. Anybody know for sure what the story is?

I don't know the exact story, but I am using NAPA brand antifreeze that mets the 1825-M spec. Says right on the jug that it has silicates.

Yea John that's what counts....the silicates. The organic acid based stuff don't use silicates and the acid derived base eats the head gaskets on our motors!

Pev, yea don't forget to drain some before the snow flies and re-fill with coolant to bring the protection back up to where it's gotta be for us "northern" Z's! I almost forgot to do that this winter....boy was that smart!
