Smile Transmission Speedometer Removal

I have an oil leak where the speedometer sensor enters the back of the transmission. My question is, do I have to drain the transmission before removing the sensor or is it above the normal oil level??

Thanks

Dave

Dave,
I removed mine to change the speedometer gear. You don't have to drain the transmission to remove the sensor, but do be prepared to catch a bit of oil that will come out when you remove the sensor.

Clean it well before removal and confirm that it's either a leak around the external OD of the VSS OR maybe leaking through the electrical connector. Which year car? The '90 cars are more prone to leaking at the connector in the center of the VSS. I believe the '91+ VSS eliminated that problem when the connector was moved to the outer OD of the VSS.

Cleaned well the '90 VSS I believe responds well to an RTV fix at the connector.
