Re: Name that Alternator Pulley
Actually need dimensions!
Here's a link to "most" CS144 service pulley dimensions. There are others: http://store.alternatorparts.com/cs1...r-pulleys.aspx Here's what these people consider a replacement for the GM 10498550 that is used on the LT5. Are the dimensions correct? I've never measured one to confirm. Haven't needed one. http://store.alternatorparts.com/sea...?find=10498550 Last edited by WVZR-1; 05-07-2014 at 07:32 AM. |

Re: Name that Alternator Pulley
Cliff - Using the link that I supplied the "effective" OD on your suggestion is maybe 5mm oversize and yes would require a washer. If you click on the images in that link it will show you dimensions and from where they're measured. Use any GM number in the search box and it should take you to the "considered" service pulley. Like I mentioned I've never measured since I've not had the need.

Re: Name that Alternator Pulley
I know my last alt had the smallest pulley I have pictured.. probably why it failed so early
so I installed an Alt last night ( got one locally) since my rebuild was installed, then a brush broke apart and took out the regulator.. I will get a good regulator for it ad get it swapped.. BUT what forgot was ow the belt goes on.. it seems impossible with the OEM size belt.. any suggestions?

Re: Name that Alternator Pulley
still seems next to impossible to get the belt on.. if it was 1/4 to 3/8 longer it would not be such a pain to do

I was actually amazed at how easily the belt was to remove and re-install after removing it to chase a noise. That was 10 years ago so maybe that's just "poor memory" but I thought it relatively simple as compared to some. Check your dimensions against the 10498550 which would have been an OE from GM. That number is from GMSPO alternator charts and service parts NOT after-market. Last edited by WVZR-1; 05-07-2014 at 09:37 AM. |

Re: Name that Alternator Pulley
I think you misunderstood.. I had a replacement Alt.. with a smaller that OEM pulley, Belt was easy on/off (like my daily drivers) swapped in a fixed replacement with the OEM pulley, belt is OEM size and it is difficult to fit the belt on.. then i remembered it being that way when I got it years ago

I will check the pulley of my OEM and compare it to : Dimensions: 21mm Belt x 62mm OD x 17mm Bore and go from there..

Re: Name that Alternator Pulley
It might be wise since you're checking to confirm the what I call the "rear pitch" dimension from fan face to 1st groove. If that were less than the OE specification it would hint a washer like Cliff's or if it were greater than it needs rethought maybe. Either of those conditions I would think would cause aggravated belt wear.

Re: Name that Alternator Pulley
everything seems to be lined up.. car is running and alt has not failed yet.
I suspect the battery needs to be replaced too
