Default A/C Blower Problem?

I am on the road in New Mexico and have had the second instance of no A/C operation. In the first case, two days ago, the A/C Programmer seemed to hang-up. It would not change modes, would not respond to Temp up or down commands, and the blower was not running. The next morning, everything worked properly.

Today, blower stopped moving air with all functions of the A/C Programmer working properly. After several hours of no A/C, the blower started and worked properly for the rest of the day's drive.

I suspect that the blower motor is failing. I didn't get a chance to "tap" on the blower while it was not running. Sometimes that will start a sluggish motor.

Anybody have any other suggestions I can try?

Does any one have a spare Blower Motor that I can buy and get you to ship it to one of my planned stops in the next few days. Please PM of email me if you can help. jim@gizmosart.com

Thanks,

Jim

If you need one I can pick one up and meet up with you when you are in the national parks in Utah. I am just a couple of hours north. I can load up my truck with tools and any parts that you might need. My work schedule is flexible and I would love to help.

Going by what you are saying, I would not be too sure it is the blower motor..

If the blower motor is hanging, why would the unit lock up and and not respond? Have you pulled AC codes?

While the Blower motor is probably the easiest fix, I am thinking it could be the programmer itself, remember it is on the fire wall and gets quite warm where it is. I do know the older C4s would have issues with the programmer failing.

just something to think about (in case the motor does not work) I might have a used motor, but I will need to look for it tomorrow evening when I get home

I am getting underway early this morn. Thanks for your suggestions and comments. It might be the programmer, but I was able to clear the hang up by pushing the selector buttons from the defroster to the power button in sequence. After it cleared, the blower still didn't start until the following morning.

If I am still having problems by the time I get to Utah, I will definitely ask for your help.

When my AC programmer buttons started acting up I removed the programmer from the dash took the face off and cleaned the circuit board were the small button nubs make contact. I cleaned with a pencil eraser. Worked great after that.

Jim,

If you need a cannibalized part let me know. I'll run up, remove and figure out a way to get it to you.
One simple part to consider is the fan resistor on top of the condenser housing.

Jim it sounds a bit like the problem I had with the buttons not functioning all the time. Couldn't make the temp setting go down, only up; sometimes blower wouldn't work, some buttons wouldn't work at all, etc. If that is the case, the most likely cause is some corrosion or some dirt on the long thin plug pins that go from the faceplate of the A/C unit into the unit itself. To take it apart you need to remove first the storage compartment cover, then the cover plate around the shifter, then covers around the unit, then the A/C head unit can be taken out. Remove the face plate carefully. The pins (there are about a half dozen in the central plug) are long and thin and need to be cleaned carefully. Solved the problem for me. Marc H says this is a common problem. It is an easy repair before you tackle the blower motor and other parts. There is a post on this somewhere in the forum and I believe Dynomite has posted it in his Solutions. --Bob

If the refrigerant is low, the coil will ice up and prevent air blowing through the coil until it thaws out. I had this problem in the 95. You can thaw it quicker, albiet a bit uncomfortable, by running the heater to "defrost" the coil. When you said after stopping overnight, it worked fine the next morning, it rang a bell. So, if it stops blowing, turn the AC off for awhile & just run the fan & see if that helps until you can check the refrigerant.

BTW Jim, I didn't read this thread until last night. Gosh, I wish I had read it sooner. We could have gotten together & shown you my LT5 parts stash & had some lunch when you came through OKC. By the time I read it, you were in Amarillo. I sure am sorry I didn't read it sooner. Never imagined you would be departing right away.

Had the same issue with my 92 conv. I did replace the blower motor but had intermediate "no blower operation". Turned out I had a bad connection at the 4 way connector under the hood. The next time it quits wiggle this connector under the hood.
