Default Rear hatch weatherstrip

I've noticed that the corners have separated, and also the vertical sections going up from the corners on both sides. The right side is worse, goes all the way up by the hinge area. I thought about trying to reseal it with some weatherstrip adhesive, but this is starting to look like it's too far gone. I've searched the forums (here and over on CF), but wanted to know if anyone has run into anything odd when replacing this seal? Any tools required, or is it just slide the old one off, clean the area, and slide the new one on? Also, where's the best place to get the weatherstrip from? I saw Mid America has the GM part in stock, and Funfest is in a couple weeks, which is good for 10% off.

Thanks,

Brian

I have not done my ZR-1, but on my 84 I bought the seals off ebay. Not the best quality but was ok for a daily driver.

I did not use any special tools. I just pulled off the old one and put the new one on with no adheasive. I am sure you could or should use adheasive, but I wanted to see how it worked without it.

The only thing you have to do is remove the hatch struts. I had a friend hold the hatch up while I pulled the struts one at a time and out the w/s under it and put it back on. When it was under both struts, just pushed it on.

Again, maybe someone will pipe up and advise the correct procedure on if you should use adheasive, but I did not and it seems to be working ok.

ffvetteman has the process down well though you need to watch out for the light colored adhesive that will be under your old weatherstrip. It's really messy and once it gets on something it's hard to clean off. I recently changed out the one on my 90 and about a year ago on my 96 and both had the factory adhesive. There will be enough there to ensure your weatherstrip won't go anywhere.
