New Accel injectors and ??? Coils
Hey all. Yesterday I bought two sets of Accels for my 91 on eb ay for a total of $406 brand new. This seems to be a really good price, but I think I bought the seller's last two sets. It was actually 189 per set plus tax since i live in fl.
So, in keeping with buying inexpensively, rather than buying expensive because it makes me feel better that I spared no expense, I see that on the same auction site, they have listed 4 coils for a total of $55. NEW IGNITION COIL SET (4) D555 10472401 C1235 DR39 Now, is a coil just a coil or is all the hype about msd, accels and all the other name brands true. I don't mind spending the money if I need to, but will the results be different if I spend $255 or whatever they cost as opposed to $55 for the set of 4? Thanks. I've already got Marc's Secondary delete chip with the header programming etc and will be doing that at the same time and I am looking forward to having the demons worked out of the engine. Sam

Re: New Accel injectors and ??? Coils
Sam,
I've had MSD coils and wires on my car since '08. Absolutely no issues. Worth the money IMHO. |

Re: New Accel injectors and ??? Coils
Thanks xfire.
The same seller has listed another set of coils which appear to be the same pictures, only at double the price. I emailed him to find out what gives... Here is his reply: "The difference is the brand these ones are original OEM ACDELCO coils. The cheaper ones are aftermarket coils." Has anyone replaced their coils with OEM AC delco? thanks again

Re: New Accel injectors and ??? Coils
I had Haibeck replace my coils with OEM AC's in 2007 when I sent the car to him. They haven't mssed a beat since.

Re: New Accel injectors and ??? Coils
OE ACDelco coils here since 07 & no issues. I actually pulled out a set of Jeggs coils in favor of the Delco's......I was worried about the environment under the plenum and the possible effects on the life of a non-ZR-1 specific waste spark coil. I proly wasted my time, but who knows?
Tom my decision to swap coils was based in part on the issues with the screamin' demon coils that seemed to crop up back in the archives. fwiw.

Re: New Accel injectors and ??? Coils
Thank you all for your replies. I think I am going to compromise and skip the 55 dollar coils in favor of the ac delco at 100 or so.
And now I just have to pray the timing chains hold up when I get my extra 200ish hp

Re: New Accel injectors and ??? Coils
That's a good question Kevin. The problem is that I don't know much about the history of the car. So the question is, how long has it been stumbling and stuttering, yanking those timing chains back an forth. It could be 6 months or 10 years, I have no way of knowing when it started.
There's an informative thread with lots of calculations about how a timing chain broke on an lt5, and it implicates this stumbling as the cause.

Re: New Accel injectors and ??? Coils
I replaced mine w/ GM coils in '08 - no issues, runs great, as a matter of fact.
Last fall I replaced my injectors with Access. Working very well - smooth idle, and no trans rattle to speak of (even with the Fidanza single mass Al flywheel) As for the chains ... some reason you suspect a chain issue? ,P.
