It had special high altatude V12 gasoline engines produced by the German company Maybach.
Today the company is known as MTU and they produce high performance diesel engines up to 12,000 hp.

Way back in 1969, when I was a Midshipman at Navy ROTC at Penn State, one of our instructors was an ex-derigible pilot. He was not a very inspiring example of a Naval Officer to us. Every command he had been assinged to had been decommissioned.

His warfare insignia was pilot's wings with only one wing! Really dumb looking!

He told a neat sea story though:

Some of the airships could fly low and use a scoop to pick up sea water to add ballast. He was doing anti-submarine exercises with a destroyer and the CO of the destroyer was jerking him around by making him run all over the map. "Go to the West and search." "Go to the East and search."

The Pilot of the airship got fed up. He paralleled the destroyers course, swooped down and scooped up some ballast, then reversed course, flew over the destroyer and dumped ballast on the destroyer's bridge. "Piss on you," he said, "I'll be in port drinking a beer at the O-Club long before you will."
