Discount Tire in Queen Creek AZ wouldn't balance the tires on my 91 Z, said they were too old. He checked & they were made in 93, so before I drive it this winter I need tires. He said it was their company policy probably has something to do with liability.

Must be liability cause we know they wouldn't do that just to sell tires?

Great info. From now on any set of tires I buy from Ebay or a tire chain will be checked for the date of MFG. And those tires blew out at legal speeds for those people. Imagine what would have happened to me the day I took the Z up to 179mph knowing my tires were old and hard. I won't do that again.

I have a thought on this subject. JMHO, we who own cars that use ultra- high performance tires are even more at risk I would think.

I'm not throwing rocks, but I'm sure that G/Y makes GS-D3's in batches. They run off what they guess to be enough to cover anticipated demand and then that run is over till all the inventory is gone. I refer in particular to the 315's on our cars. I'm sure that G/Y has a good idea how often to make a run of 315's, but it isn't every other year.

The more I think about it, maybe the solution is to look around and find the most popular size tire that is close to what we need and switch. What I'm thinking is if going to an 18" wheel puts a ZR-1 in with the majority of ultra performance tire sizes most commonly used as OE, then maybe that's what we should do? Maybe even consider which manufacturer has the lion's share of the OE market and go with whom ever that is as a brand of choice?

I love the wet grip of my D3's. It just seems to me that if I stay with them in 17" sizes, I'll have to time my tire buys with G/Y's production schedule?

One of the reasons I switched to C6 Z wheels was availability of rubber.

It's just like the new DOT helmet regs. If you believe the mfgs then you need to trash you helmet because it is no good anymore.

From what I can tell the rubber used in newer (dated tires) is different from those previous. Are newer tires (younger that 6yrs) safer that old? sure.
Are the old tires worthless of unsafe? I don't think so.
At the extremes yah sure if you go 155+ on a regular basis back and forth to work then you ought get off the dime and invest in new rubber.

Mine are 13 yrs old & I have considered changing them for new ones. I don't do very much high speed driving but want to feel that I am safe on those occasions.
