Vibration/Rattle in the Shifter

I noticed on the way home from our gathering in New Braunsfels that my shifter will now rattle a little in second gear if I dont have my hand on the shifter. What can cause this?

C Beam bolts.
Crawl under the car and re-torque them.
To really fix the problem for good, buy and install a set of Beam Plates from Bill B.

You may also want to ckeck the shim adjustment at the shifter. under the shift boot where the shifter actually mounts in the shifter housing - There are shims that are used to remove the slight play that may be felt in the shifter and to tighten it up. If you ever replace your shifter with a Hurst - It comes with new shims. If you have ever pulled your shifter you may have lost a shim or two. They are very thin - only a couple of thousandths - .002 or so. They are placed in the front and rear of the shifter in the housing.

But also check the Beam plate bolts as well.

what does the beam plate do?

the beam is a stiffining beam that runs the length of the drive shaft connecting the trans to the diff. It reduces flex and torque in the chassis and the drive line.

see if the shifter "rises" when you get on it. beam bolts being lose casue that.

the plates really do help the car and make the beam mounting way easier.

If you are still running a stock shifter with the lockout ring, there is a 3mm set screw that does back out and lets the rod rattle around and make noise.

Do not over tighten them. Big probs for the transmission.

I agree. They also make it much easier to take the C Beam on and off.
You don't have to reach up on top and try and hold the nuts each time.

Jeff, is the set screw under the top of the shift knob, or on the side of the shaft?

Rick, it is located at the 6 O'clock position on the shifter itself. It actually goes through the lift ring collar.
