Default C5 6 speed

I just test drove a C5 for a daily driver. It's high mileage, the transmission starts to sound like a truck transmission, not a whine, in 4th while cruising, 5th is louder and 6th is louder than 5th. While coasting or decelerating, the sound is gone.

Does this sound normal, or should they be quiet like the 6 speed in the C4's?

Thanks for any input.

I think the diff (ring&pinion) has a lot of wear. The whine seems to get louder with vehicle speed and load...unless you are saying that it is still louder in 6th at 45 mph than 5th at at 70 mph.

coast and load sound is gear mesh of the R&P. The C5 diff carried to the C6 for the first year and was subsequently upgraded due to the 6 liter engine and high failure rate.

It seems the frequency of the noise changes with the gear selected and the sound can be felt through the shifter also, I would rather deal with diff problem than a trans though.

I think I'll let it go. It has enough other issues, I don't feel like dealing with the rearend also.

Oh well........it does have 120000 miles.

120K on an LS1 it's just getting broken in. I agree pass because that car has a trans or diff problem.

IMO.....C5's will go down as the most reliable vette made as of now.

My '98 was the worst car I ever owned. Maybe the later C5s were better.

I had a 98 as well...the seats were rocking back and forth because something that held them steady crumbled to pieced in the GA heat. I had every seal in the transmit ion replaced for major leakage, and to top it off it had a problem with running into parking garage walls with a woman behind the wheel. No more 98's. Weak *** 345HP to. 99's had 350.
