Default TB cover replacement>>>

As I am progressing with my work on my new ZR I thought I would share this info about replacing the TB plate/cover (I asked a lot of questions from present ZR owners, got their ideas and added a few of my own).

First why replace? ..well the plate had the coolant induced pox so it looks crappy (that is a technical term for you non mechanically inclined )

The solution was simple... CARTER... so here are a few pics etc:

Removal of the plate can be straight forward assuming the plate gasket is not stuck onto the TB or the plate which could cause the gasket to tear and that leads to another 'limited available parts' search.

Remove the (5) Torx T20 screws keeping track of where they are removed from... removal of the plate was simple in my case.. after removing the Trox screws I hand tightened a course thread sheet metal type screw in the opposing corners of the plate and then used a interior trim removal tool (it is harden plastic thus will not bung up the TB when prying) to slowly and carefully pry up the plate>>

In my case the plate came off easily without damaging the gasket...here is the old plate, the way to keep track of the screw locations and the wonderful piece of artwork Carter replacement TB plate...

Next I cleaned out the TB plate well of coolant then used a Dremel tool with a soft brass rotary wheel to clean out the area where the gasket makes contact with the TB...I use a vacuum to remove any resulting dust etc...also cleaned up the threads of the Torx screws with the Dremel tool... cleaned up quite nicely>>

Now cleaned up and installed the gasket & CARTER TB plate and use caution tightening the Torx screws..tighten opposites a little at a time then do a final tightening (gentle here)

What an improvement...wonderful work Carter!

The OEM plate will be cleaned up and powder coated (to match OEM finish) so if I ever want to go back total OEM can do so...Here is the OEM plate with just a bit of Dremel work...you can see the metal is fine it was just the finish that went bad...

Michael

Carter, that plate looks awesome, nice work. One day youll do mine, my friend.

I honestly think the LT5 would look cleaner) with plain cam covers (no Corvette lettering) and just the coolant pipes and TB engraved. Oh, and polish the whole darn thing.

Size XXX flame suit on
