Track Action Starts Today at Le Mans

Andy Hall 6-9-2004

LE MANS, France (June 9, 2004) – On-track action starts today at the Circuit de La Sarthe as race teams begin practicing and qualifying for this weekend’s 72nd running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Teams will have two hours of track time today beginning at 7 p.m. Paris time (1 p.m. U.S. Eastern) and then another two starting at 10 p.m. (4 p.m. Eastern). The sessions are both practice and qualifying, as the best lap turned by each car will be considered its qualifying lap.

Race fans who want to follow the action can listen to the broadcast of Radio Le Mans online at www.radiolemans.com and with live timing and scoring online at www.lemans.org.

A similar schedule will be followed on Thursday. There will be no track time on Friday as teams make final preparations for the race, which starts at 4 p.m. (Paris time) on Saturday. A brief warm-up will be held Saturday morning.

Eleven racing teams that regularly compete in American Le Mans Series events are among the 48 that will be competing in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Twenty of the 48 teams raced in the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring that started the 2004 American Le Mans Series season in March. Fourteen American drivers are in the field.

The SPEED Channel will have live television coverage of 20.5 hours of the event starting at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.
