Cam Timing Micrometer Tip
When timing the LT5 cams using the lobe center method it's necessary to use a micrometer on the lifter face. There's very little room for the tip of the micrometer to clear the cam lobe and the head structural features. The common micrometer tips available are too large or not shaped to clear the cam or head.
An easy solution is to purchase #40 drill rod and a 4-48 UNF die and make your own tip. 4-48 UNF is the universal thread for micrometer tips and #40 drill rod has strength but is still bendable. The drill rod can be cut with side cut pliers and the cut end rounded with a file. The die cuts the threads easily but be careful to keep it straight when starting the die on the rod. See the pics. Marshall's Hardware in San Diego is my go to source for hardware such as this as well as 10.9 hardness and stainless steel metric fasteners. |
