Default Opinions on this 1990 Lingenfelter Vette

LINGENFELTER 1990 C4 CORVETTE Convertible 400 CID 570 HP
- 570 Horsepower @ 7,000 RPM
- 400 CID 11:1 compression - 93 Octane
- 6 Speed Manual Transmission
Featured in Vette Magazine July 1993 where John Lingenfelter ran the car at
Beach Bend Dragway where it produced a high 10 sec 1/4 mile @ 126 MPH with slicks
GM Bow Tie Aluminum Block
GM Splayed Valve Cylinder Heads
Lingenfelter custom solid roller camshaft
Lingenfelter fabricated aluminum EFI intake manifold
58 mm billet throttle body
Lingenfelter custom fabricated headers & Borla exhaust
3.90 rear differential
ZR1 8,000 RPM tach
27545ZR17 31535ZR17 Goodyear GSC Tires
22,000 miles only driven in summer months
Bose CD radio, leather seats, power drivers seat, engine oil cooler
Fiberglass front and rear bumper covers and body color side moldings replaced
Interior color changed to 1993 light tan (original saddle) with all new GM parts in 1993

Asking Price:
$20,000

So this engine makes 570hp at a fun 7000rpm and has run high tens on slicks.
It has $3000 worth of bare heads with minor machining rough as cast 240cc ports,as cats 45cc chambers, plus valves, headwork etc. I have seen 1 flow chart with over 400cfm on the intakes, but would depend largely in the porting done, but I cant see Lingenfelter doing poor portwork.
$5000 worth of block
At least $1500 crank
$1000 headers
$1000 in the shaft mounted roller rockers
The ECM tune should be decent from Lingenfelters as well.

They are asking $20,000.

Sure would be a fun car to drive, being able to use ALL of that ZR-1 tach thats installed.

What do you guys think? Anyone know this car?
Any advice, comments or plains BS'ing is happily welcome.

I could get into a decent ZR-1 for $20,000, but certainly not a ZR-1 with 22,000miles.

Grrrr, wheres my winning lottery ticket lol.

peace

Looks pretty nice, engine looks like it needs a cleaning (could be the pics), but that's no big deal. Sounds like a blast to drive. I was able to pick up my '90 w/ 33K mi, for $18K, of course it needed several thousand $ worth of work, but there are Z's out there in that range with reasonable mileage. I didn't see any Lingenfelter badges on it other than the engine, can you get ones for the car?

Not sure about badges for the car, not sure what type of badges you could get with their cars, I'm sure I could talk them into throwing in a Lingenfelter decal for the top of the windshield. But who knows?
This car wasnt a typical Lingenfelter package, those "splayed valve" heads have over 1000hp potential naturally aspirated.
the more research I do about the engine, the more my interest is heightened. There is more to this engine than I originally thought.
It would be better if it wasn't a convertible. Thats a lot of twist for a drop top.

Headers for splayed heads, similar to LT5 so far as the equal spacing between each port, unlike a typical SBC

Combustion chambers-shows the "splayed valve" symetrical chambers

After some machining

Looks like CNC port jobs cost from $3500-$4000 for these heads, not including the heads themselves.

John Lingenfelter worked on various differnt projects in his days. One of my favouites is the run of 1994 GMC and Chevrolet Suburbans he did. These featured 605 cid BBC's with Lingenfelter designed intake manifolds. The prototype used a speed-density setup with a t-body that pointed towards the passenger side. The production models featured a forward pointing t-body with speed-density and some featured the same t-body with a MAF and 1990 Camaro MAF ECM.
The prototype was rated at 560hp SAE net hp@4200rpm/705 lb/ft torque with that 9.9 liters/605 cubic inches breathing through stock 1990-1993 454SS dual cat exhaust systems in order to get its emmisions

0-60mph 4.6 secs. in 4wd
0-60mph 4.7 secs. in 2wd
5-60mph 5.0 secs.
0-100mph 12.5 secs
0-130mph 28.7 secs
1/4 mile 13.3@103mph
Braking 70-0 231ft
0.68 g's handling
Curb weight 6289 lbs
8mpg Not a great number, but remember the 1990 454SS pickup with its 230hp/385 lb/ft engine and 3 speed th-400 non-OD trans and 3.73 rear gears was rated at 9mpg city/10mpg highway,1991-93 with 255hp/405lb/ft torque and the 4.10:1 gearing and 4l80e OD trans netted 10mpgcity/11mpg highway.
So double the power and almost double the torque and only drop 1 or 2 mpg isnt too bad.

Production versions came with 605 sae net hp/780 lb/ft according to online sources. Pic here

They also did a 1996 Chev Tahoe with a 396 SBC using a 3.875" stoke crank, it was rated at 400hp/500lb/ft torque using Lingenfelter SuperRam intake, aluminum heads, forged steel crankshaft, custom camshaft, stainless steel valves, aluminum pistons, K&N air filter, custom radiator, Borla exhaust, stock 75mm MAF and 75mm T-body
Bell Tech lowering kit, Rancho shocks, high-rate torsion bars, front/rear anti-roll bars, custom torque converter, built transmission, Baer racing brakes.

It ran a 13.8 in the 1/4 mile, 0-60mph in 5.1 seconds and 0.95 g's on the skidpad when Motortrend tested it.
"These numbers match the performance figures of the C4 Corvette and GMC Syclones/Typhoons of that era. "M/T

There has been many a cool vehicle come out of that shop.

I think what is really cool is the one off intake. It appears to be a combination of a "super ram & mini-ram" all in one. It definately is a one off item and obviously works well. I would also assume that it is not a hydraulic roller engine. If the car truly can use its 8000 rpm I doubt it is and will need occasional adjustments if it is solid. Really cool car with great performance . Definately would be a sleeper. Another example of just how good L98s can be. I love my ZR-1 but I love my 90 L98 as well and it has proven to be an excellent / reliable race car. Some might have a hard time with the price being an L98 but when you smoke some guy in a a new Z06 it becomes priceless.

that is a cool intake, and totally :Lingenfelter custom as GM doesnt support the intake manifold or rocker arms, they rely on the aftermarket to supply these parts for the "splayed valve" heads as the intake ports are unique as the runners arent in pairs. The intake and exhaust runners are seperate unlike conventional SBC. Exhaust ports are spaced similar to LT5 seperate exhaust runners.

Here is a little illustration that shows the valve angles for the heads on this car.

This arrangement is similar to the canted valves found on the BBC. This allows for minimum intake valves of 2.20" without valve shrouding from te cylinder wall.

The cam is a solid roller Lingenfelter grind. Lingenfelter is saying that the grind is custom though. I'm guessing its their 236º/244º 0.590"/0.590" on a 112º, but I cant confirm. If it is its leaving a lot of power on the table.
These heads allow for big flow numbers, on par for high flow ported 4 valve LT5 heads. Lots of power at high rpm, but low rpm torque is probably lacking, but the 400 cubes would help a bit along with the manual trans and 3.90 gears. The headers are Lingenfelter custom made and the exhaust is Borla.

Interesting setup for sure.
