Drag Racing at BG

I would think that since this is just a bunch of friends getting together and renting the track and that it is not an actual club sponsored event that there would not be an issue. Especially since everyone is going to sign a waiver anyways. The Club is not present. It's just a bunch of individuals.

If I decide to pull the drag racing event off this year , it will be the last year that I will get involved with this. The club will be on it's own with this decision.

Frank, we certainly all appreciate your efforts on this. But I agree that someone organizing the gathering on behalf of the Registry should arrange for racing well in advance--like now?--so that we can get a large group lined up for next year's gathering. However, I fully understand that we may have too small a group at next year's gathering to make financial sense of renting the track or some time on it. How come the "diesel guys" seem able to get the track for our weekend and we can't? Just more people? Anyway, if you get it going I am in for this year on Thursday.--Bob

Just thinking out loud here. I HAVE NO KNOWLEDGE OF THE FINANCIALS.......

How many events does the Registry really have to spend money on each year?

Gathering and maybe Carlisle?? Other events that I'm leaving out???

Would it seem to be asking too much for the Registry to pay for the track day during the Gathering? I apologize to the Board if my question is out of line.

Bob (warp ten) has nothing to do with how many people it's if you have the cash track is yours.

If you pay for the weekend you could race all by yourself the whole track is yours, in this case cash talks.

How/who did drag racing event 10-15 years ago,didn't the club do it?

back in the early 2000's when we didn't have a club, other then the .net (the list serve it wasn't a registry then) a member bank rolled it. I don't see the need for that to happen now since the club is siting on nearly $40,000 in assets as of dec 2012

So this has something to do with this insurance thingy.

So does this mean when the club has BBQ's and someone gets food poisoning they can sue the club,WTF.

If so then we all need to sign release forms.

I think I brought up the INS thing years ago when I was the VP. I had learned lots from putting on the events at Nellis AFB.

BL - there is Club Insurance you can buy to cover all your high performance and normal club events. As I remember it wasn't too bad it just took some legwork to get it done.

And because we seem to have lot's of excess cash in the till we should consider buying our own policy...

What I ended up doing for the Nellis events was to piggy back on the SCCA and the local car clubs that had policies in place. Was just too easy that way...

Let me interject my thoughts into this subject. These opinions are strictly my own and not that of the Board of Directors.

1) First and foremost I would love to see drag racing at the Gathering

2) The Registry has never paid for drag racing, the participants always paid for their racing.

3) For $1500 the track could be rented without safety equipment, without track prep and without timing devices. This amount was for initially 8 racers, then it became 8-10, then may we could sneak a few more on if we didn't make a scene. I have seen maybe 8 people say they are willing to drag race. For $2500 we would have all of the items listed above.

4) I am sure that Beech Bend does have insurance.

5) While the Registry does have assets of approximately $40,000, only $25,000 is in cash and belongs to all the members. Equally to those in Spain, Australia, California, Illinois, Kentucky and so on.

6) There is a test & tune on Saturday night available to all.

So the question becomes what responsibility does the Registry incur if it "pays" for the drag racing for the 1st time and what is the consequence if 15 cars race and something happens? Beech Bend's insurance will surely specify that we breached the contract by having more that 8 cars and they are out of the line of fire.

Keep in mind that we are not piggy-backing onto another event, onto another organizations responsibility, we would be doing this ourselves.

Should we have D&O insurance? Absolutely!

Shouldn't this event have been planned and done correctly so that the $2500 option taken? Absolutely.

Should the entire membership fund this event? I don't know...

The proposal presented to the Board was that the Registry fund at least in part (50% was likely) drag racing on a track without safety equipment, without timing devices, without track prep and to exceed the number of people in the contract.

I want drag racing, but I couldn't say "yes" to that.

So the question really comes down to should we pay $2500 to do it right?
