I also saw your car today. Other than needing simple cleaning, it really looks great. I'm glad to hear you plan to keep it. I have no doubt that years down the road you'll be happy about keeping it.

Let us know how we can help. You car is about 20 minutes from my work (and 40 minutes from my house).
Thanks for checking it out. Really appreciative.

Thanks, I'll gather some information from Steve and make an attempt to safely get the car to him depending on his availability.

Just got home, Wow what a nice drive in old Blue....

I checked everything I could before starting, the tech had a sign on the window do not start!!!! So I did, even after sitting with a dead battery for who knows how many months it fired right up!! Had the normal chain rattle for about 15 sec. than smoothed out nice sounded very solid, Let the clutch out in neutral and got instant bang bang pushed the clutch back in and it was gone again did this many times while letting it warm up and checking for codes (none).

I believe the issue is with the flywheel, clutch assembly, worst case transmission related. Anyone with ideas welcome to chime in. I did not get to drive it as they had it blocked in.

Overall the car was what you would expect of cared for 30K mile car just dirty from sitting.

Could you feel the impact through the shifter from the banging?

For the OP: can you provide specific details about what all was involved when the flywheel & clutch were replaced, i.e.
flywheel source,
clutch disc, brand/source, model or type number,
pressure plate, stock one reinstalled, aftermarket:brand, model, type

There are many possible combinations of clutch discs that may or may not work with the original pressure plate & dual mass flywheel, not counting being installed improperly.

All of the details you can provide will help.

BIG QUESTION: Did all this banging sound start after the flywheel/clutch work was performed..... or before?

Great work Steve! MUCH different than an engine replacement!!! Gathering that the banging was evident before full engagement of the clutch and that it was there regardless of which gear was selected.. Certainly sounds like FW, Clutch disk or PP are strong possibilities..

lcmeeks, I sent you a Private Message to give you my phone info.. Good to have another LT-5 guy in the area! We've got a good group here now and getting bigger all the time

Thanks for the input

Regarding flywheel/clutch information: Not sure as this was done prior to me taking over the car, but I will ask the shop if they have records.

Regarding "banging": I think the car had the knocking sound a few years ago which promoted them to do the flywheel/clutch work which then resulted in this new banging noise.

Will try and get more info....

Flywheel is spinning with no engine issues in Neutral (Clutch IN)....no noise and I assume no vibration.

Release Pressure Plate in neutral and noise......and bang bang....whatever that is....has to be Pressure Plate, Clutch Disk, Pilot Bearing or Transmission (bang bang in neutral does not make much sense for Transmission).....So...these guys replace Pressure Plate or Clutch Disk or Throwout Bearing? and No Knock after that until now? I assume they did not touch Flywheel? And did not touch Pilot Bearing?

Maybe Pilot Bearing is shot, missing, or set in too far and when engaging Trans....Clutch Disk and Transmission input shaft wobbles like hell and goes Bang Bang each wobble since nothing to assure Clutch Plate is centered on Flywheel as it finds its own center which is OFF CENTER

Did this red vette get out of the garage that claimed it needed $12,000 motor?
I am facing a similar issue with both my 2 X ZR-1's. I have run out of patience and help to get them to start, and it's looking like I will have to pick some mechanic shop that is clueless about the LT5 cars, and then a $500 fix will turn into a $10,000 repair bill. I also thing of scraping my cars, if I can't find more help.

Lloyd can give you a proper update, but the car is with Henderson Performance here in Texas for diagnostics and repair. Wish you were closer to me here in Houston to help you diagnose and fix the issues. Don't know who to recommend in Alberta. Perhaps another Registry member can help with a recommendation.

Is shipping the car(s) to Marc Haibeck near Chicago an option. I know you'll spend several hundred shipping it but you may save a bunch in the long run.
