I can offer some instructions on how to build a great exhaust system for a ZR-1. It's the system I've had on my car for about 15 years.

See this web page.
Thanks again, Hib, sure appreciate your knowledge and your taking the time to reply!

Thanks for all the replies, guys! I really appreciate it!

Let me clarify: some time in the future, I am going with SW headers, no cats, Corsa black-tip system, full emissions removal. At this point, I am looking for some SOUND, because I miss the loud rumble of my cats-only L98. I am looking for a temporary, inexpensive fix, because I'm not going to junk $1000 in mods when I go with my dream system 6 months down the road. After your helpful comments today, I am seriously considering 2 options for right now and all include my stock 90 manifolds with cats. 1) replace stock resonator with an x-pipe and retain stock mufflers. 2) install a Corsa resonator that a buddy has offered me, and remove the mufflers altogether.

Any more thoughts?

Thanks bros!

Guys on the other forum were bitching about how loud muffler eliminators were but I tried them anyway and LOVED them! Might have liked it louder, in fact.

So, I'm really set on a Corsa system but just I'm trying my best to be pragmatic and give proper consideration to different options before pulling the trigger. Wondering about just modifying my stock system by replacing the resonator with an X-pipe and deleting the mufflers altogether...just straight black LT-1 tips out the back. The only "mufflers" would be the cats, just like on my '87. I see very little potential for resonance with this setup. VERY, VERY inexpensive system, good return of HP, lots of sound.

Remember, I like to HEAR my car. If I want quiet, I drive my Camry.

Thoughts?

Thanks!
Chris
Try putting on a set of Moroso spiral flow mufflers on your car and see whats happens.

Ok, I put a handful of videos in one spot of several exhaust combinations I have had in the last 3 years. First of all and last of all- this means nothing as the little microphone on my digital camera videos doesn't really do these much justice, except for the static one of the car parked showing the NPP flaps in action. That is the only one you can hear the decibels and resonance come in.

Maybe there is some idea of how much of a megaphone the Corsa system was that can be derived from the audio there... I'm going to claim statute of limitations for the hitchhiker I let drive the car the day the Corsa video was filmed.

Corsa doing 90 something with windows down:

NPP StainlessWorks, headers with LS7 cats- but you can't hear the system activate too well in this clip:

B&B w X-pipe and stock manifolds (don't let the audio fool you- this was stupid loud):

My old 95 LT1 car with turbo muffs, single outlets- Yes, it's slow...

better video clip of stock exhaust except x-pipe in place of resonator- accelerating uphill with passenger- loud-ish, but can still talk and hear yourself think.

My ZR-1 has undergone some evolutionary changes from stock, to it's current configuration & honestly, it's obnoxious and not real fun to travel in, because of the noise. The fact is, I don't travel in it.

If I can ever get around to it, I want to put a C6 style, muffler set up on it with the WOT valves, or whatever they are called.

It is good looking though!

Thanks so much for taking the time to post these, Mike. The 41 second clip is very helpful; I think it sounds pretty good with the x-pipe in place of the resonator. Seems like a good cheap, temporary fix.

Thanks again for taking the time!

WOW, Jerry! It may be obnoxious, but yours clearly wins best-looking exhaust system honors!
