I have no quantitative data to support when these are necessary. I can say that upon teardown, my engine showed signs of the main caps "walking" with the OEM fasteners. That was a 4" stroke / 7000 rpm / 700+ crank horsepower.

The OEM fasteners are torque-to-yield, and the M12 bolt is NLA. These studs represent a convenient alternative to re-using the factory bolts.

I know that on the engine that I'm rebuilding now, at 112,000 miles on the factory build there were signs of slight walk/chatter.
