Re: My little piece of Corvette history,ITS HUGE!Check it out.
It's been a while since I've read Duntov's famed 1953 letter. When it circulated through GM upper management in the early-'50s, it opened a lot of "eyes". Needless to say, it changed the way GM looked at the enthusiast community and motorsports. It set standards for marketing to enthusiasts which have endured for almost 70 years.
I met Jim McFarland when he worked at Edelbrock as VP R&D. He was one of my mentors during the early years of my career working for automotive media. McFarland is a unique guy in our hobby. he has a rare combination of journalistic, marketing and engineering skills. Jim have remained friends over the years and I consider him one of the giants in the hot rod hobby. He and Zora Duntov were close friends during the final years of Duntov's career at GM. McFarland recorded one of the last interviews with Duntov before he died. Somewhere in my mess of a new office, I have a copy of the interview which Jim sent me. Copies of that letter surface from time to time as a few of them have made it into the hobby over the years. Duntov was a smart dude. Not only did he know how to engineer cars but he had some good ideas on how to market them to car enthusaists, as well.
