Gears make a difference no doubt. I have the B+B 3rd Gen and the drive from BG had drone in it right at the 14-1600rpm range. Anywhere from about 60-75mph with 3.45s. Right now I am scanning the car to see if I can reduce drone thru tuning. I've always found that running a bit lean will "sweeten" and mellow tthe sound at cruise. My 84 with Magnaflow catback, TPIS headers and Random Tech cat had a resonance point similar to the ZR motor. Not much diff and with 3.45 Dana 44, it was at the same rpm. Tuning it helps quite a bit. Looking at the scan, the drone comes in with a 50-65kPa MAP and richer BLMs like 117-122 or so.
P.S. I may be going the LT-4 resonator route, so my B+B resonator could be for sale if someone is interested.
