That's a crazy piece of footage. I'd forgotten about that '98 test in R&T.
That track at Ft. Stockton was treacherous eight years before on the Record Run. To think that someone would go 218 on a track having banked turns with no guardrails, is freakin' amazing. Ole Lingey's balls were so big he had to roll them around in a freakin' wheelbarrow. As for this... Quote:

Paul Smith showed a video of that event at one of our TX BBQs about 8 years ago. We ran and re-ran the part where a Viper caught on fire on the other side of the track and they tried to put the fire out by throwing sand on it. Memories that can't be un-seen.
