Re: Any of the recommended transmission fluids red?
Someone put ATF in that transmission. Not good.
It's absolutely not Red Line Heavy Shockproof. The stuff in the bucket is too thin and RLHS is not transparent. You would not see RLHS in a transmission, anyway. I know Marc suggests it for the S6-40, but during the late 90s, I was involved with Red Line helping their Chief Chemist, Roy Howell, test the Shockproof line for street use in the S6-40 and other applications. After testing, we decided Heavy Shockproof is a poor choice for helical-gear manual transmissions factory-filled with ATF or 5W30 engine oil. We settled on Light Shockproof for that. Red Line MTL also, is not red. When I had Barney I used Red Line Light Shockproof in the ZF S6-40. It worked very well for the 15 years I used it. I would change it about every three years. I noted improved shift feel and a slight decrease in gear rattle.

Re: Any of the recommended transmission fluids red?
What would happen if somebody did indeed run ATF in the zf-6?
Seems hard to believe someone could do that. SMH....

Re: Any of the recommended transmission fluids red?
Back in 2004 I had a tranny melt down while at BG. I had done a hole shot/ burnout and the transmission started to have a high pitched whine. I talked to Marc about it and later Bill B. at ZF Doc. I let the car cool down for about an hour but the noise was still present. It finally went away but the damage was done. On occasion leaving a light normal driving it would sometimes jump out of first gear. Hard acceleration it stayed in gear.
Bill B. after hearing my description said it was probably due to poor oiling. He also said the reverse gear probably welded itself to the primary shaft that first and second gear share. He said he fixes the poor oiling when he does a transmission blueprinting. The previous owner used the RLHS in it. It was a modified 91 with long tube headers no cats, big early style 3" B&B and 4.10 gears. It was not equipped with a light weight flywheel. Recently on You tube I watched a video recorded at one of Marc's BG seminar talks. He discusses an owner who shipped his car to Europe where he lived. He was driving it at 150 MPH when the transmission locked up. Marc was talking about problems that might occur if driving at speeds above 150 MPH for extended periods. I will admit I had driven my 91 at speeds of 150 MPH or more but not for long periods. Minutes / several miles yes. But not for more than say 5 miles at a time. Remember this happened while doing a burnout at BG. It was RLHS in the trans. I still have it in my garage. Plan on sending it to Bill for him to do his magic on. But who knows exactly what happened inside of it. I opted to purchase a new GM replacement ZF 6S-40 from Tom Henry when they ran a blow out on them.

Re: Any of the recommended transmission fluids red?
I found the video and will share a link. In this video Marc talks about a possible problem when driving over 120 MPH for more than a few minutes. He also said it isn't a common problem but it did happen to an owner who he prepped his car before it was shipped to France where he lived. It was a 94 Z. Mine didn't lock up. It had the high pitched noise. It would jump out of first gear sometimes.

Re: Any of the recommended transmission fluids red?
The Redline MTL really made a difference in shift quality. The transmission is so much smoother and much lighter action. I wonder why someone thought it would be a good idea to use ATF.
