Seller runs a ranch/ retreat for Veterans....

ABOUT THE COLLECTION
For the past 12 years, Ronnie Rains of Odessa, Texas, has been opening his sprawling ranch property in Roosevelt, Texas, to wounded soldiers, veterans and their families as a place to heal. The 3,000-plus acre property features exotic animals, a golf course, navigable waters and more, as well as a truly amazing car barn that feels much more like a commercially designed museum space and presents close to 50 classic and collector cars at a time. A true enthusiast and prolific collector, Rains’ entire collection is actually much larger than the car barn can hold, and he’s decided it’s time to scale back and change that, and to do so, he will offer a selection of close to 100 vehicles at the world’s largest classic and collector car auction this January in Kissimmee.

Known as Granite Ranch and located in the expansive lands of South Central Texas, Rains’ “Little Piece of Heaven on Earth” has become an unofficial retreat center and vacation destination for those affected by the ravages of war. Each year, throngs of wounded soldiers, veterans and their families flock to the ranch for an all-expenses-paid break from the rest of the world.

“I tell everyone who comes, all you need to bring is your toothbrush and underwear,” Rains said. Since he first opened the ranch’s doors to wounded veterans 12 years ago, Rains has hosted troops from virtually every branch of the U.S. Armed Forces. Most have been soldiers who were severely wounded at war, and Rains said that helping injured vets and their families is something that is very important to him. Rains is a Vietnam veteran himself, and when his small private business eventually became successful enough to allow him to give back in a big way, he knew he wanted to focus on helping other veterans.

Rains is proud of his little piece of Heaven, but he’s also a busy man and on the heels of turning 69, and he’s ready to scale at least his car collection back to a more manageable size. With a continued focus on charitable work with injured veterans and a desire to travel a bit more, Rains said that he’s confident that offering this selection of vehicles with Mecum will be a positive experience for him and a step in the right direction.

“I never bought these cars to make money, so I’m not real worried about how they do at auction—I guess more than anything, I just hope they go to a home of somebody that enjoys them.”

I have the story because I bought it. It is a 368. It did come with full documentation, including dyno sheets that show 535 hp peak. Paint is quite good, but it needs a good buff and complete detail. It was part of the Ronnie Rains collection... he had nearly 100 cars for sale at this auction and few were fully detailed. I met and talked with Ronnie, seemed like a very nice, down to earth guy. It seemed like everything is in order mechanically and Ronnie said it was, but it is impossible to know for sure until I get a chance to drive it. 1500 miles from home and a winter storm meant I had to ship it. The work was done by Lingenfelter in 1997 at 9700 miles and it now has 11,100 miles. It was delivered new in 1989 and is a relatively low VIN. See his quote at the end of the last post... I intend to deliver on my end. Meanwhile, I need to find a new home for my Red/red 1990 with 40,000 miles...
