I can't even be sure if my car had the original sensors though. The wheels have been changed by a prior owner, and the body has 154k on it. I doubt the original sensors survived that many tire changes.

I asked Marc Haibeck about this issue and now I understand the confusion. There are 2 lights--who knew? I see the light at start up and then it goes out but did not know there is another light that must have been pulled by a PO. Marc explains as follows:

There are two bulbs. One for the LTPWS control system and one that goes on when a tire is detected as having low pressure. The system error light has been removed. The low pressure light never goes on when driving because there are no sensors to report a low tire pressure. When the ignition is turned on normally both lights flash for the lamp test. In your car only the low pressure lamp goes on when the ignition is turned on. A detailed description of the LTPWS system is located here:

My 90 has the full system and it works. Tires under 25 and I got a low tire light. My "specialness" is that when I get near cell towers I get a Service LTPWS light. Goes off after a few miles. Anyone else have that issue?

I also have a 90 with a full working system, and the LTPWS light comes on intermittently as well. I never correlated that with proximity to cell towers .. I'll pay attention next time! I thought I just had a sensor on the fritz.

I never noticed that on my 91 but it makes sense as they do send a signal to the receiver.
